Category: Inspiration, News, Date: 27 May 2025

Western Australia is a treasure trove of natural wonders— From rolling hills and lush vineyards to outback adventures and turquoise seas, the west really has it all. But with the state spanning over 2.5 million square kilometres, knowing where to begin your journey can feel overwhelming.

That’s where our new series, Hidden Gems of WA, comes in. We’re here to uncover the roads less travelled—starting with a true showstopper: Francois Peron National Park in the Shark Bay Heritage Area.

Known as the place where the red desert meets the turquoise blue sea, Francois Peron National Park is truly a rare find. The breathtaking waters surrounding this park are teeming with marine life—dugong, manta rays, turtles, sharks and many more. This iconic destination offers a unique opportunity to swim, snorkel, canoe and fish amongst some of Australia’s most rare species.

The stunning landscape of rugged red cliffs and arid shrubland is perfect to explore via 4WD adventure. For the best views of the coastline, take the 1.5km Wanamalu Trail between Cape Peron and Skipjack Point, before stopping at the Visitors Centre to enjoy a picnic and learn more about this extraordinary region.

What’s in the Area?

The adventure doesn’t stop at the scenery. Uncover the history of the region with a visit to the old sheep station complete with shearing shed, quarters and stock yards, before checking out the nearby Shark Bay—home to the striking Big Lagoon and Little Lagoon. These tranquil land locked saline lakes offer the perfect opportunity for a dip.

Another nearby highlight is the warm, crystal-clear water of Monkey Mia—where you can share an unforgettable swim with the region’s famously friendly bottlenose dolphins.

Where to Stay:

The Shark Bay region offers a wide range of accommodation—whether you’re after cosy cabins, luxe glamping, or beachfront sites. For the closest options to Francois Peron National Park, we recommend RAC Monkey Mia Resort or Tasman Holiday Parks Denham Seaside.
