We only needed power. What we found was so much more than that.
We’d been staying at Carnarvon Gorge, where we’d spent our days hiking and exploring one of Queensland’s most spectacular national parks. On the third morning we woke to find our batteries were almost flat. We had to move. We needed power.
Our solution was simple enough. Hit the road, let the drive put some charge back into the batteries and find ourselves a powered site for the night. At that point, we weren’t looking for anything fancy. We just needed somewhere to plug in, recharge everything and reset.
That search led us to BIG4 Lake Maraboon Holiday Village, just outside Emerald.
We pulled in expecting a practical overnight stop. What we found felt like luxury.
After the rugged beauty and hiking trails of Carnarvon Gorge, suddenly we were surrounded by green lawns, cockatoos, a beautiful pool and the kind of caravan park that immediately makes you want to stay longer than planned.
The park is packed with facilities: showers, toilets, laundry facilities, BBQs, camp kitchens and a fully stocked kiosk.
As if that wasn’t enough, we then discovered the onsite cafe and bar where we could order pizza and eat it lounging beside the pool.
Sitting poolside with a pizza felt ridiculously indulgent. When you live in a caravan full-time, luxury starts to look a little different. A powered site, a swimming pool and someone else cooking for you… heaven.
But Lake Maraboon had another surprise waiting for us.
That evening we packed a picnic, our fishing rods and headed down to the lake for sunset.
Sitting beside that huge expanse of water as the light changed across the lake was one of those simple, yet wonderfully romantic travel moments. There was nowhere we needed to be, nothing we needed to do and, importantly, nothing we needed to worry about.
After weeks on the road, this was the stop we didn’t know we needed.
Turns out, it wasn’t just the caravan batteries that needed recharging.
