When you think ‘Surfing in Tasmania’, think ‘secluded, pristine beaches’, ‘surf for all abilities’, and ‘everything from gentle swells to expert adventures’. Tassie’s exposure to strong westerly winds, creates some pretty gnarly surf breaks all over the island.
If you’re looking for your next surfing adventure, a trip to Tasmania is just what you need! Here are our top spots:
King Island in the North of Tasmania is one of the Jewels in Tassie’s surfing crown. Martha Lavinia is famed as one of the best waves in the world. Enjoy the perfect A-frame here or head to some of the other local hotspots including Phoques Bay, Colliers Beach and Seal Bay.
With a super consistent swell, Green Point Beach at Marrawah on the west coast is a surfing haven for Tasmanians. Home to Tasmania’s premier surf event, the West Coast Classic, the three beaches (Ann Bay, Mason Bay and Green Point), offer long, enjoyable rides when the conditions are right.
You can enjoy fantastic surf all along the Great Eastern Drive on Tassie’s east coast, but our favourites are definitely the coastal town of Bicheno and at the mouth of the Scamander River. The Scamander River can offer great waves when there is a SE swell however, watch out for rips. Bicheno is a great reliable surf, and a charming seaside stop with some delicious local seafood!
Arguably the best surf in Tasmania, the south coast is home to the world-famous ‘Shipstern Bluff’. This is touted to be one of the most challenging waves in the world! Not for the faint of heart—it is home to huge swells, sharks and shallow reef. Only advanced or pro surfers should attempt this break but you can find more epic swells at Eaglehawk Neck or Cliftons Beach, the latter being more suitable for beginners.
