Category: Inspiration, News, Date: 28 May 2025

When winter wraps its crisp chill around Tasmania, the island doesn’t hibernate—it ignites. From Hobart’s bold and moody arts scene to the wild coastal beauty of the east, Tassie’s cooler months are filled with dark delights, fiery feasts, and soul-stirring festivals.

Ready to lean into the dark? Here are the top winter events happening across Tasmania in 2025.

1. Dark Mofo (June 5–15 & June 21, 2025)

Dark Mofo, Hobart’s renowned midwinter arts festival, returns in 2025 with a full program after a brief hiatus. The festival explores themes of darkness, ancient rituals, and the winter solstice through large-scale public art, music, and performances. Highlights include the provocative “Crash Body” performance, where a car crash is staged as art, and “Custody” by Carlos Martiel, featuring the artist buried under 1.5 tonnes of sand inside an hourglass. The festival culminates with the iconic Nude Solstice Swim on June 21, inviting brave participants to welcome the dawn in the River Derwent.

2. Winter Feast (June 5–8 & June 12–15, 2025)

As part of Dark Mofo, the Winter Feast is a culinary celebration held at Princes Wharf No. 1 and Salamanca Lawns. The event features over 70 stallholders offering a diverse array of dishes, from wallaby wings and possum bao to baby abalone skewers and fire-charred camel. Renowned chefs like Mumbai’s Niyati Rao and local favorite Analiese Gregory will showcase their talents, while live music and a First Nations talent showcase add to the festive atmosphere.

3. Bay of Fires Winter Arts Festival (June 6–15, 2025)

Held in and around St Helens on Tasmania’s east coast, this festival celebrates local and international artists through exhibitions, open studios, and workshops. The centerpiece is the Bay of Fires Art Prize, a $20,000 acquisitive award. Visitors can explore the “Secret People, Secret Places” trail, connecting various artist studios, and even participate in the Dawn Dash n Splash, a clothing-optional sunrise swim at Binalong Bay.

4. Tasmanian Whisky Week (August 2–10, 2025)
