Category: Inspiration, News, Date: 30 March 2023

Camping can be a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors and connect with nature, but it’s important to take steps to stay healthy while you’re out there.

Staying healthy while camping is crucial to having a successful and enjoyable trip.

When you’re in the great outdoors, you’re often exposed to new environments and challenges that can put your health at risk.

The physical activity involved in camping, such as hiking and carrying gear, can also take a toll on your body.

By taking steps to stay healthy, such as staying hydrated, eating nutritious food, and getting enough rest, you’ll be better equipped to handle these challenges and enjoy your time in nature.

Additionally, staying healthy while camping can help you avoid illnesses or injuries that could cut your trip short and prevent you from fully experiencing the beauty and wonder of the outdoors.

Here are some tips for staying at your peak while camping so you can enjoy your trip to the fullest!

Stay hydrated

Always make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated, especially if you’re camping in a hot or dry climate (which Australia often is!).

Bring a reusable water bottle or hydration pack with you and have some backup water supply ready to go to ensure you’ll always be able to stay hydrated.

Protect yourself from the sun

Wear sunscreen with a high SPF (preferably 50+) and make sure to reapply ever 2-4 hours, especially if you’ll be spending a lot of time outside.

Wearing a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from the sun’s rays can be a game-changer, so always have them in an easy-to-grab location.

Pack healthy food

Bring nutritious snacks and meals with you, such as fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains.

Avoid processed foods and sugary snacks, which can lead to energy crashes.

Whilst it’s not an issue to pig out and enjoy our favourite naughty treats here and there- if you’re on an extended camping trip eating only unhealthy foods; you might find the developing of short and long-term health issues.

Practice good hygiene

Wash your hands regularly, especially before preparing and eating food.

Bring along a hand sanitiser in your backpack just in case soap and water aren’t available.

Always keep your campsite clean and tidy to reduce the risk of illness.

Stay active

Take advantage of the opportunities for physical activity that camping provides, such as hiking, swimming, and kayaking.

Stay active throughout the day to keep your energy levels up and your body healthy- and improves your general wellness overall.

So go get that extra dopamine and serotonin boost and get active!

Get plenty of rest

Make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep each night, as lack of sleep can lead to a range of health issues and can simply just ruin your trip.

Bring a comfortable sleeping bag and pad if you’re doing it old school- otherwise if staying in a cabin, bring something from home, like a pillow or a blanket, to help you settle in an unfamiliar bed.

Do try to stick to a regular sleep schedule, and if you’re having regular sleeping issues- try and cut back on the booze.

Protect yourself from bugs

Mosquitoes, ticks, and other bugs can carry diseases, so it’s important to take steps to protect yourself.

Wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants, use insect repellent, and check for ticks regularly.

Take breaks and rest as needed

Camping can be tiring, especially if you’re engaging in physical activity like hiking or swimming.

Take breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge, and listen to your body if you need to take a break or adjust your activity level.
