There’s something special about slowing down and exploring the Fleurieu Peninsula one country road at a time. From rolling green hills to rugged coastline, cosy cafés and seaside townships, this region is made for relaxed road trips filled with local flavour.
Only an hour south of Adelaide, the Fleurieu Peninsula is one of South Australia’s most loved getaway destinations and it’s easy to see why. Visitors can spend the morning wandering through country towns and local markets before heading towards the coast to soak up ocean views, fresh sea air and some of South Australia’s best scenic drives.
As the cooler months roll in, whale watching season begins along the Fleurieu coastline, with Southern Right Whales regularly spotted around Victor Harbor, Port Elliot and Encounter Bay between May and October. Some of the best viewing points include The Bluff at Victor Harbor, Basham Beach and the clifftops surrounding Port Elliot, where visitors may spot whales cruising close to shore.
The drive through Mount Compass offers beautiful rolling farmland, towering gum trees and winding country roads that perfectly capture the relaxed charm of the Fleurieu Peninsula. It’s the ideal starting point before continuing towards Port Elliot, Victor Harbor and Encounter Bay.

While exploring Mount Compass, make time for a stop at The Range Restaurant overlooking the Mount Compass Golf Course, regarded as one of Australia’s top 100 golf courses. Known for its scenic setting and locally inspired menu, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a long lunch while taking in sweeping views across the rolling Fleurieu hills and beautifully maintained greens.
For something more casual, visitors can stop into Cafe Clyde & Co in the heart of Mount Compass, a popular local café loved for its quality coffee, brunch offerings and welcoming country atmosphere. Nearby, Ginny Pig Distillery offers locally crafted gin in a relaxed setting, making it the perfect spot to unwind and soak up the laid-back charm of the Fleurieu.
Food lovers should also add the Willunga Farmers Market to their itinerary. Held every Saturday morning, the market is one of South Australia’s premier regional produce destinations, showcasing fresh Fleurieu produce, artisan breads, pastries, local cheeses, handcrafted goods and renowned McLaren Vale wines from local growers and makers.
If you’re travelling further south, stop into the coastal town of Port Elliot and grab a famous pastry from the Port Elliot Bakery before taking a walk along Horseshoe Bay. Nearby Victor Harbor also offers plenty of cafés, boutique shopping, scenic walking trails and seaside views perfect for a relaxed afternoon stop.

For those continuing further south, Goolwa offers another beautiful stop where the Murray River meets the sea with birdlife abundant on the barrage and surrounding river backwaters.
The beauty of exploring the Fleurieu Peninsula by caravan or camper is having the freedom to take your time. Whether you’re chasing coastal scenery, whale watching experiences, country hospitality or local produce, there are plenty of fantastic parks nearby to use as your base while exploring the region.
