From Riverlands to Coastline: Exploring The Mighty Murray Way

The Murray River flows for more than 2,500 kilometres from the Snowies in NSW to the Southern Ocean in South Australia. The Mighty Murray Way is an epic adventure which takes you through the heartland of the Murray River, uncovering stunning scenery, rich aboriginal culture, gourmet food and wine, riverboat tours and much more. Renmark to Loxton

Renmark is known as the heart of the Riverland. It is famous for its fresh produce, cellar doors and breweries and magnificent river scenery. Kicking off the Mighty Murray Way, visit the Woolshed Brewery. This iconic brewery is located within a historic, 100-year-old shearing shed of Wilkadene Station. Enjoy the rich history, beautiful surrounds and good local brew. While in the area, visit Australia’s largest rose garden at Ruston’s and for the kids, make sure you check out the Monash Adventure Park.

Loxton to Morgan

The historic town of Loxton has tons to offer. ‘The Village’, a historical attraction depicts the life of early Riverland settlers and features fascinating history on the region. There are countless walk and bike trails to enjoy and great food and wine on offer in the many local eateries. On your way to Morgan, make sure you stop at the Heavan Clifftop Viewpoint for breathtaking views of the Murray and Havenhand Chocolates in Waikerie for some delicious treats.  

Another great stop along this route is Lake Bonney. It’s worth staying a night at Discovery Parks Lake Bonney to soak up the sunset views and beautiful natural pool. While in Morgan, check out the Morgan Conservation Park. The wetlands provide fabulous opportunities for canoeing and appreciating the local birdlife.

Morgan to Taliem Bend

South of Morgan on the way to Taliem Bend, is Big Bend, the longest bend in the Murray River. Known for its spectacular riverside cliffs, the Big Bend by Night tour is a well-worth it experience that showcases the Murray’s stunning scenery against the backdrop of the starry-night skies.  

While on your journey, stop by the Ngaut Ngaut Conservation Park, a hidden gem of the Mighty Murray Way and one of the most significant Aboriginal culture sites in South Australia. Another must-see is The River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve. This amazing reserve boasts some of the darkest night skies in the world with over 5,000 visible stars.

Taliem Bend to Goolwa

On the home stretch of the Mighty Murray Way, head towards the coast to Goolwa. Along the way make time to visit the Longhorne Creek Wine Region and The Bend Motorsport Park, a state-of-the-art motorsport facility.  

Once you reach Goolwa, enjoy Australia’s best whiskey at the Fleurieu Distillery and don’t miss the stunning Coorong National Park. The 130-kilometre stretch of saltwater lagoons is protected from the Southern Ocean by sweeping sand dunes and is an immensely popular spot.
