Kangaroo Island is a true nature’s wonderland that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime, but after your first visit, you’ll be left longing to return to this place where time goes slower, the people are friendlier, and the stunning natural environment enchants you to make you feel a million miles away from it all.
Stretching 155 kilometres long and 55 kilometres wide, Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third largest island. Thirty per cent of the island is protected as conservation and national parks and it is several degrees warmer in winter and cooler in summer than the mainland.
There are so many things to see and do on KI that staying for just a few days is never enough, plan to stay a week at least to take in iconic Seal Bay and its colony of Australian Sea Lions, bushwalk in Flinders Chase National Park and make sure you catch sight of the little penguins as they emerge from the sea at the end of the day. Naturally, snorkelling and kayaking are big on KI and there are plenty of bays, jetties and beaches to fish from. You can even book a tour to swim with the dolphins.
Gastronomically Kangaroo Island delivers! From delicious seafood including freshly harvested oysters and King George whiting, to Ligurian KI honey, lavender scones and award-winning beers, wines, gin and ciders, you’ll find something unique and delectable on the island.
To get to the island with your car and caravan, you can drive to Cape Jervis and connect with a regular passenger and car ferry.
There are 4 SA Parks member caravan parks altogether on the island including KI Seafront Holiday Park at Penneshaw and the Western KI Caravan Park and Wildlife Reserve at Karatta, plus 2 recent additions which are Discovery Lagoon Campsite at Emu Bay and KI Caravan Park in Kingscote.
You can find out more about all of these SA Parks member parks here.
