Drive Safe This Fatality Free Friday

Category: News, Safety, Date: 22 May 2026

As winter road trip season approaches, next Friday marks an important reminder for all travellers to put safety first on Australian roads.

On Friday 29 May 2026, the annual Australian Road Safety Foundation Fatality Free Friday campaign returns, encouraging all road users to take personal responsibility and help reduce road trauma across the country. For caravanners and road trippers preparing for winter travel adventures, it’s also a timely reminder to ensure both your vehicle and caravan are road-ready before hitting the road.

The campaign is built around a simple but powerful message — if Australia can go one day without a fatality on our roads, it highlights the impact safe driving habits can have every day of the year. Sadly, road trauma continues to affect thousands of Australians annually, with 1,314 lives lost on Australian roads last year alone.

Key Road Safety Reminders This Winter

Fatigue

Fatigue remains one of the biggest dangers on Australian roads, particularly during long-distance travel.

  • Take a break at least every two hours
  • Share driving duties where possible
  • Avoid pushing through tiredness
  • Stop immediately if you notice signs of fatigue

Distraction

Even small distractions can have serious consequences behind the wheel.

Before leaving:

  • Set your phone to Do Not Disturb
  • Load maps and music before driving
  • Secure loose items inside the vehicle
  • Minimise distractions while towing

Speed & Winter Conditions

Speeding reduces reaction time and increases braking distances — especially when towing a caravan or camper.

Winter road conditions can also bring:

  • Early morning fog
  • Wet or slippery roads
  • Reduced visibility
  • Shorter daylight hours

Allow extra travel time and adjust your driving to suit the conditions.

Caravan & Towing Safety Checks

Before setting off on your next winter getaway, complete a full vehicle and caravan safety check.

Vehicle & Caravan Checks

  • Check tyre pressure and tyre condition on both the vehicle and caravan
  • Test brakes, lights and indicators
  • Inspect brake controllers and towing mirrors
  • Ensure suspension and weight distribution are correct

Hitch & Connections

  • Ensure the coupling is fully locked
  • Cross and secure safety chains
  • Test electrical connections and trailer lights
  • Complete a walk-around before every departure

Trip Planning

Planning ahead can make your journey safer and less stressful.

  • Map out fuel stops and rest areas
  • Check road closures and weather conditions
  • Allow extra travel time
  • Have a backup route if conditions change
