WA Road Trip: Granite & Woodlands Discovery Trail 

Discover one of Western Australia’s best-kept secrets—the Granite & Woodlands Discovery Trail, a lesser-known road trip adventure through the state’s Golden Outback region. Stretching between Hyden and Wave Rock in the Wheatbelt and Norseman in the Goldfields, this scenic drive explores one of the world’s largest and most pristine temperate woodlands. 

With 16 dedicated stops along the way, this remote journey takes you through sandy heathlands, granite outcrops and colourful countryside, offering a truly unique experience for travellers seeking a peaceful escape into nature. 

Hyden & Wave Rock 

Kicking off your adventure in Hyden, don’t miss the spectacular natural wonder that is Wave Rock. Rising 15 metres high and more than 100 metres long, this magnificent multicoloured granite cliff looks just like a wave frozen in time. Explore nearby walking trails and local highlights such as Hippo’s Yawn and Mulka’s Cave before uncovering more gems around the town. 

Hyden itself is a charming Wheatbelt destination bursting with culture and country hospitality. Visit the Margaret Blackburn Collection, showcasing artefacts dating back to the 1600s, meet the koalas and rare white kangaroos at the Wildlife Park, or step back in time at the Pioneer Town Museum, home to fascinating displays from the early 1900s. 

Hitting the Trail 

From Hyden, the Discovery Trail follows a gravel route all the way to Norseman. The road has been upgraded and is suitable for both 2WD vehicles and caravans, making it an accessible adventure for all travellers. 

As you travel through nickel and gold mining country along the Holland Track, soak up the expansive views and vibrant wildflowers. Keep an eye out for bush turkeys, dingoes and other native wildlife, and don’t miss The Breakaways Camp, where striking rocky outcrops and cliffs reveal the true colours of the Golden Outback. 

Trail Highlights 

Along the way, stop at any of the 16 interpretive sites—perfect for walking, picnicking, and sightseeing. Some must-see highlights include: 

• McDermid Rock – An ancient granite monolith offering breathtaking panoramic views along a 1.5 km loop trail. 

• Lake Johnston – A vast salt pan framed by a striking natural dune sculpted from windblown salt and sand. 

• Disappointment Rock— An iconic landmark surrounded by rugged terrain and sweeping views. 

• The Gemfields – Try your luck fossicking for agate and opalite in this designated public area. 

• Lake Cowan Lookout—A glistening Salt Lake with panoramic views and a reflective surface. 

• Woodlands Walk – Located on the eastern side of Norseman, this trail marks the end of your journey and offers a window into the landscape of world’s biggest untouched temperate woodlands. 

Norseman & Beyond 

Arriving in Norseman, take time to explore this fascinating Goldfields town. Take in the breathtaking panoramas at nearby Beacon Hill, dive into the region’s rich mining history at Phoenix Park, or tee off on the world’s longest golf course, the Nullarbor Links!
