Category: News, Safety, Date: 18 February 2025

Surfing in the Northern Territory is not for the faint hearted—we won’t lie, you may come up against some saltwater crocs, dangerous jellyfish and numerous shark species however, when the conditions are right, the vibes are truly unmatched.

Nightcliff

During Monsoon season, one of the most popular spots to catch a wave is at Nightcliff beach in Darwin. Described by locals as one of the most relaxed surfs around, its one place to enjoy a reliable surf in the Top End. As always— keep an eye out for Top End marine dangers!

Casuarina

Around the corner from Nightcliff, Casuarina is another popular spot for a surf in Darwin. With an exposed beach break and offshore winds from the east, local surfers will head here when the conditions are right to enjoy the breaks.

Gove Peninsula

There are more than 200 beaches in the NT classified as ‘surf beaches’ and more than half of these are in East Arnhem Land. Outside of Darwin, your best bet at finding a good break is on the Gove Peninsula (Nhulunbuy) in East Arnhem.

Town Beach (Gadalathami) is the main surf beach and patrolled by Gove SLS most of the year. Another great little gem in the area is Little Bondi Beach (Baringura)—Gove SLSL patrol this beach at certain times of the year so you can enjoy your surf with peace-of-mine however, be mindful that crocs, jellyfish and more may be present.

Rapid Creek

Rapid Creek, also in the Darwin region, is an exposed reef break with fairly consistent surf for most of the year. Conditions are often best in January with offshore winds from the south-southeast.
