The Castle in the Rainforest – Paronella Park, Queensland

Category: Inspiration, News, Date: 1 July 2026

If there’s one place in Far North Queensland that genuinely feels surreal, it’s Paronella Park.

Hidden in the rainforest near Innisfail, this crumbling Spanish-style castle looks like something pulled straight from another country, another era, or honestly, another world entirely.

And somehow, it’s even better in person.

The dream continues

The magic of Paronella Park is not in the castle or the waterfall, it’s the story behind it all.

Paronella Park was built in the 1930s by José Paronella, a Spanish migrant who dreamed of creating a castle and gardens in the middle of the tropical rainforest.

What he created was way ahead of its time.

It feels less like a tourist attraction and more like discovering a forgotten world.

As we stepped into the remains of the grand ballroom, it was impossible not to wonder what it looked like back in the day.

Warren reached for my hand and we began to dance. And as he did, music began to play.

Suddenly, the cracked concrete beneath our feet disappeared. The rainforest faded into the background. In my mind, the room was alive again. I imagined the women in elegant gowns drifting across the dance floor, their dresses sweeping around their ankles. Men in crisp suits laughing over glasses of champagne as the warm Queensland evening filtered through the open windows.

For a few brief moments, we were transported back to the 1930s, sharing in José Paronella’s dream exactly as he had imagined it.

Then as the sun set, the ballroom returned to ruins, the vines reclaimed the walls, and the sounds of the rainforest drifted back in.

Little did we know a staff member had turned on the music in preparation for the night tour. It felt like it was just for us.

The whole place has this quiet, magical feeling to it. You walk through dense tropical gardens hearing waterfalls in the background while exploring ruins slowly being reclaimed by the rainforest.

Stay for the night tour

The daytime tour is wonderful but you must also experience the night tour. This takes it to another level.

Once the lights come on and the ruins glow through the rainforest, the entire park changes. The waterfalls light up, shadows move through the trees, and the castle feels genuinely haunting in the best possible way.

It’s one of the few tourist spots that actually lives up to the hype.

Worth adding to your lap?

Absolutely.

Especially if you’re travelling between Mission Beach and Cairns.

It’s an easy stop, caravan-friendly, and a perfect break from long driving days or endless beach hopping. You could spend a few hours there or take your time and soak it all in.

Best of all, included in your admission is a site for the night so you can experience all that Paronella Park has to offer.

The paddock is a van park for guests. Drive through sites, lined with trees for privacy. Newly built amenities and camp kitchen. Access to power, water, and laundry facilities. It has it all!

Also just a short walk away is Mena Creek Hotel where you can stop for a drink or a meal.

However long you decide to stay, it’s one of those places you’ll still be talking about long after you leave.

Final thought

Far North Queensland has no shortage of beautiful places.

But Paronella Park is different.

It’s magic.
