This is the first chapter in our new series following the Burney family as they head off on their second lap of Australia — sharing the real, lived-in side of life on the road.
Yep, on purpose.
We’re a family of four who’ve been travelling Australia full-time for the past 15 months. Two adults, two little boys, one caravan, and a whole lot of memories made along the way.
When we first hit the road, we did it with equal parts excitement and “we’ll figure it out as we go” energy. And that first lap taught us more than any amount of planning ever could. We learnt what we actually need, what we absolutely don’t, and how quickly life on the road strips things back to what really matters.
Fewer things. More time. Slower days.

Now we’re preparing for our second lap, and it feels very different. In the best way.
This time, we’re more prepared, more confident, and far more realistic. We know how exhausting travel days can be, how important routine is for the kids, and that slowing down almost always leads to the best experiences. We’ve learnt lessons around budgeting, vehicle and caravan maintenance, rest days, and listening to our gut when a place (or plan) just doesn’t feel right.
We know what gear we actually use every day and what never left the cupboard. We know that racing the map isn’t the goal. And we’ve learnt that sometimes the best plan really is no plan at all.
This lap, we’re doing things a little differently.

We’ll be sharing our real-life budget as a family of four, our favourite camp spots, kid friendly areas, and the honest realities of life on the road. Not just the picture-perfect sunsets, but the messy bits in between, the challenges, the wins, and the chaos that comes with choosing this lifestyle.
A little more prepared. A lot more honest. And still just as open to whatever comes next.
