Located just 12km from Strathgordon, the dam holds back the mighty Gordon River and can be reached via the Gordon River Road — a hidden gem in its own right. The drive winds through the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, treating travellers to breathtaking views of rugged mountains, lush forests, and deep river gorges. 

Built in 1974, the Gordon Dam stands at an impressive 140 metres high, making it Tasmania’s tallest dam and one of the most spectacular in Australia. It forms part of the state’s historic Hydro Tasmania scheme, a project that shaped much of Tasmania’s energy story and landscape. The dam is also connected to some of the state’s most significant environmental moments, including the Franklin Dam controversy and the flooding of Lake Pedder in the early 1970s — pivotal events that defined modern conservation in Australia. 

The pristine Gordon Lake, created by the dam, is Tasmania’s largest lake and a stunning sight surrounded by dramatic wilderness. Visitors can walk across the dam wall for panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and water below. Feeling bold?
