Swim, Snorkel, and Explore: A Hidden Gem of the Southern Great Barrier Reef

Category: Inspiration, News, Date: 16 June 2025

Queensland is home to some of Australia’s most breathtaking islands — and one of its lesser-known treasures is Lady Musgrave Island. Located just off the Bundaberg coastline, it’s radiant waters and a vibrant reef make it a true tropical escape.

Spanning more than 3,000 acres of living reef, this hidden gem is often described as one of the most magical places on Earth by those who visit.

Lady Musgrave Island is teeming with life — from vibrant bird colonies to thriving marine ecosystems. You’ll find turtles, manta rays, dolphins, and colourful reef fish in abundance. It’s a dream destination for snorkelling, scuba diving, whale watching, and island exploration.

The island is completely untouched — formed from coral polyps and covered in dense forest. While camping is permitted with a pre-approved permit, visitors must come fully prepared. There are no facilities on the island, so you’ll need to bring all essential supplies, including food and water. Alternatively, guided day tours from Bundaberg or 1770 offer an easier way to experience the island’s spectacular reef, wildlife, and natural beauty.

As part of the Southern Great Barrier Reef, Lady Musgrave Island offers a more relaxed, less crowded alternative to the busier northern reef destinations. With crystal-clear lagoons and vibrant coral gardens, it’s an unspoiled slice of paradise ideal for nature lovers, families, and first-time visitors alike.

Where to Stay Near Lady Musgrave Island

The Bundaberg and Southern Great Barrier Reef regions offer plenty of excellent accommodation options for your stay.

Discovery Parks – Bagara

For tours departing from 1770, consider NRMA Agnes Water Holiday Park or the 1770 Campground. If you’re based near Bundaberg, Discovery Parks – Bargara and Turtle Sands Caravan Park are both excellent options close to the coast.
