Spring is when New South Wales properly wakes up. The nights are milder, the road trip itch kicks in, and the state’s calendar fills with everything from engine roars to orchestra pits. Whether you’re chasing adventure, keeping the kids entertained, or after something a little more cultured, here are the spring events in New South Wales worth pencilling into the diary in 2026.

Seeking Adventure

If you like your spring loud, fast and a little dusty, New South Wales delivers in a big way this year.

Repco Bathurst 1000

Deni Ute Muster kicks things off on 2 and 3 October in Deniliquin, with camping open from 1 to 4 October. Expect ute driving competitions, a Show n Shine, bull rides, live country music, and a dedicated family centre with free kids’ activities if you’re bringing the whole crew. General admission includes free camping, so it’s an easy one to fold into a road trip.

From there, point the van toward Mount Panorama for the Repco Bathurst 1000, running 8 to 11 October. Bathurst becomes the largest annual campsite in the Southern Hemisphere during race week, with more than 25,000 campers making the circuit home for a few days. Even if motorsport isn’t usually your thing, the atmosphere alone is worth experiencing once.

Rounding out the adventure calendar is the Rugby League World Cup, running 15 October to 15 November. NSW has landed a serious share of the action, with Sydney’s Allianz Stadium hosting the opening match between Australia and New Zealand, semi-finals split between Sydney and Newcastle, and the entire Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup staged at Wollongong’s WIN Entertainment Centre. A genuine excuse to plan a trip around Sydney, Newcastle or Wollongong this spring.

Family Friendly

Spring school holidays fall between 28 September and 9 October this year, and New South Wales has plenty on to keep the family entertained.

Grafton Jacaranda Festival

Disney’s The Lion King is playing at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre daily, with its record-breaking season now extended through to Sunday 1 November. Plenty of time to catch it over the school holidays if a big theatre outing is on the cards.

Further north, the Grafton Jacaranda Festival runs from 30 October to 8 November, turning the town’s famous purple-lined streets into one of the state’s most iconic free spring events. While it’s outside of the school holiday period, it’s the kind of festival worth building a weekend around regardless.

And if you’re after something that never lets you down, Taronga Zoo, the Australian Museum, and the Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour all run reliable school holiday programs every single break. Exact spring activities are usually announced closer to the date, but these three are always a safe bet for a day out that keeps everyone happy.

Culture Curators

For a slower-paced spring, New South Wales’ regional arts and produce scene is well worth the drive.

Flavours of Mudgee

The Wollombi Valley Sculpture Festival runs from 12 to 27 September, bringing sculpture trails and art installations to the Hunter Valley’s quieter corners.

Foodies should look at Flavours of Mudgee on 26 September, a celebration of the region’s produce and wine, followed by the Orange Wine Festival from 16 to 25 October if you want to extend the wine trail further into spring.

Rounding it out, the Sydney Fringe Festival takes over the city all September long, New South Wales’ largest independent arts festival with more than 350 events and 2,000 artists across 64 venues. Expect theatre, comedy, cabaret, circus and music in every corner of Sydney, all month.

However you like to spend your seasons, whether that’s chasing engines at Bathurst, cheering from the stands at the Rugby League World Cup, or wandering a sculpture trail with a glass of Mudgee red in hand, New South Wales has a full events calendar this spring. Pack the van, pick your pace, and get out there.
