When we asked our community “What’s one place in Australia you think everyone should visit at least once?”, the responses flooded in. From outback icons to hidden coastal gems, your answers painted a picture of a country packed with must-see adventures and bucket list destinations. Here are the standout spots, as recommended by you.
Topping the list was Uluru – the heart of Australia and an unforgettable experience. Many of you agreed that seeing Uluru at least once is essential: Des G., Gail C., Jes L., Jo-Anne D., Justine M. C., Kathryn R., Linda B., Nghia N., Raelene M., Roni O., Sandra C. T., Sue R., Tasha B., Tonee T., Tracey G., Val L., Vicki G., Vivienne T.
Several also added nearby icons: Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon and Alice Springs (mentioned by Helena K., Jes L., Tracey C., Susi P.). Together, these make the Red Centre one of Australia’s most powerful and awe-inspiring regions to explore.
Tasmania earned passionate praise, with many calling it their “must-visit” or even their favourite place in the country. Shout-outs came from Alec S., Angela B., Ann C., Dewa M., DiandGeoff M., Fay L. T., Faye H., GE W., Irene H., Peta F., Ronnie D., Roz A., Sandra P., Tania H., Yvonne D.
From wild coastlines to gourmet food, world-class walks, and convict history, it’s clear Tasmania has left a mark on those who’ve travelled there.
The Kimberley region was another community favourite. Amy W., Denis W., Donalea R., and Sandra G. all put it forward, often alongside Ningaloo Reef, Broome and Karijini National Park. Wayne P., Brett H., Rod D., Shona M., and Jean M. highlighted the unforgettable experience of Horizontal Falls, while Ningaloo Reef and Coral Bay were championed by Bronwyn P., Kris L., Leasa N., Marlene B., Mignon A. R., Nardine B., and Vicki P.
With its red gorges, remote coastlines and world-class natural wonders, it’s no wonder this corner of Western Australia keeps drawing travellers back for more.
The Great Barrier Reef remains a bucket-list destination, recommended by Alexander M., Di R., Jolly R., Colleen S. and many others. Community members also pointed to highlights like Heart Reef and Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays (Colleen S., Kerry S.).
Fraser Island/K’gari was mentioned multiple times too (Be M., Hannah G., Mitchell E., Tracy K.) – with its freshwater lakes, sand dunes, and wild beach drives. For those who love remote adventures, Cape York (Delvene R., Natalie V-L., Rod D.) earned a spot for its wild landscapes and sense of true frontier travel, while Carnarvon Gorge (Delvene R.) impressed with its towering cliffs, lush walking trails and ancient Indigenous rock art hidden deep in Queensland’s sandstone heartland.
It’s clear Queensland’s tropical north captures imaginations like few places on earth.
When it comes to epic road trips, the Great Ocean Road stood tall. Chiluka D., Di R., Gayle H., Jean M., Sandra C. T. all agreed it’s a must-drive journey. Add to that the Grampians (Dianne A., Jeff S.), Wilson’s Promontory (Kasia Q., Katrina M., Kerry S.) and Phillip Island (Al W., Gayle H.) — and Victoria clearly has plenty of natural showstoppers to explore.
South Australia’s Kangaroo Island earned nods from Andrew J., Natalie B., thanks to its rugged coastlines and wildlife encounters. Coober Pedy was also mentioned multiple times (Cheryel H., Kate B., Steve C.), with its underground homes and otherworldly landscapes offering something completely unique.
From the red sands of the outback to the windswept southern coast, South Australia delivers adventure in every direction.
Plenty of other places got love too – from Canberra’s War Memorial (Austin B. G., Daryl C., Jeff L., Janno W., Mark N.) to Kakadu (Noeline B.), Birdsville (Geoffrey F.), and hidden gems like Merimbula on the NSW South Coast (Gayle H.), Naracoorte Caves in South Australia (Gayle H.), and the beloved Paronella Park in Queensland (Jean M., Kate S.).
If one thing’s clear, it’s that narrowing down to a single “must-see” in Australia is nearly impossible. Our community proves the true beauty of this country is in its diversity – from desert landscapes to rainforest, coastlines to cultural icons.
So, if you haven’t yet been to Uluru, Tasmania, the Kimberley, North Qld or the Great Ocean Road, you know where to start.
