This quiet, off-the-grid destination offers a unique way to explore one of Victoria’s least developed coastal islands. Choose from short strolls to half- or full-day hikes, discover quiet sandy beaches, or cool off in the refreshing coastal waters.
Wander through diverse island habitats on foot via the 5km Old Coast Road walking track, which winds through heathland and woodland. At low tide, stroll along the shoreline of Fairhaven Beach to spot roosting shorebirds in their natural environment. For sweeping views over Phillip Island, Western Port, and the wetlands, tackle the 9.6km West Coast Wetlands Walk.
French Island is a haven for native wildlife, supporting a thriving population of Long-nosed Potoroos and hosting Victoria’s most significant community of Koalas. Critically endangered Eastern-barred Bandicoots have been successfully introduced to French Island, where the absence of foxes and minimal human impact create one of the safest havens for native wildlife in Victoria.
The island’s diverse ecosystems—including wetlands, mangroves, and salt marshes—offer a spectacular year-round habitat for waterbirds. More than 230 bird species have been recorded here, along with 33 species of waders that forage along the coast during low tide. You may spot soaring sea eagles overhead, or find herons, egrets, and ibis feeding in the mudflats, where shellfish, crabs, and worms thrive.
French Island is accessible by ferry from Stony Point or Cowes—both around 90 to 120 minutes’ drive from Melbourne. The ferry ride takes just 10 to 12 minutes, arriving at Tankerton Jetty on the island. Guided tours to the island are also available.
Back on the mainland, the Mornington Peninsula is packed with experiences. Enjoy swimming and surf beaches, soak in natural hot springs, explore wineries and cellar doors, or sample gourmet local produce at bustling markets and eateries.
The region is also home to a number of incredible national parks and walking trails.
