The Big Lap – Nullarbor ➝ Ningaloo (via Esperance)

Category: Inspiration, News, Date: 23 March 2026

If you couldn’t tell how keen we were to hit the road again, the odometer will happily explain it.

3,400 kilometres. In one month.

We weren’t sightseeing. We were on a mission.

Second lap energy is elite. You skip the “why did we stop here last time?” places and double down on the good stuff. It’s efficient chaos — highly recommend.

Crossing the Nullarbor

The Nullarbor isn’t boring — you’re just doing it wrong.

Big skies. Dead-straight roads. Absolutely nothing for kilometres… and somehow we love it every time. Music on, me trying to read my Kindle between bumps, and the kids rotating between singing, dancing and losing their minds in the back.

Must-stops:

  • Penong Windmill Museum — more windmills than expected
  • Nullarbor Roadhouse — iconic photo, dingoes if you’re lucky
  • Bunda Cliffs — dramatic ocean views that make you feel very small
  • Border Village — SA/WA photo stop
  • 90 Mile Straight — 146km, perfect for questioning your life choices
  • Balladonia Roadhouse — playground for the kids, plus a museum (sanity saver for everyone)

Fuel Tips (Because the Nulla Isn’t Cheap)

Plan your fuel. Don’t wing it unless you enjoy paying premium prices out of spite.

  • Use apps like Petrol Spy
  • Know your range
  • Top up before the expensive stretches

Camps we rate:

  • Newman’s Rock’s — $0 (peaceful, proper outback vibes)

Rolling Into Esperance

Esperance feels like a reward for surviving the Nullarbor.

White sand so bright it hurts your eyes. Water so blue it looks edited. The kind of beaches that make you question every other beach you’ve ever liked.

Our favourites:

  • Twilight Beach
  • Lucky Bay (4WD access, kangaroos pending)
  • Wharton Beach
  • Wylie Bay (4WD access)
  • Blue Haven Beach

Camping nearby:

  • Alexander Bay — $15 per person
  • Thomas River — $15 per person

From red dirt to ridiculous turquoise, this stretch never disappoints.

Next stop: Ningaloo.
More kilometres. More chaos. Wouldn’t have it any other way.
