North vs South Stradbroke Island: Which Hidden Gem Should You Visit Next?

Category: Inspiration, News, RoadtoaMillion2526, Uncategorised, Date: 17 October 2025

Stradbroke Island—North and South—are little slices of paradise, easily accessible from Brisbane or the Gold Coast. Known to the local Quandamooka people as Minjerribah, these stunning island escapes are home to epic beaches, native wildlife and breathtaking sunsets.

Here’s why a Straddie stopover is perfect for your next Queensland holiday:

A Tale of Two Islands

Once a single landmass, Stradbroke Island was split into North and South in the 1890s by a powerful storm. Today, both islands are accessible by boat and offer equally beautiful yet distinct experiences. The key difference? South Stradbroke is car-free, while North Stradbroke is serviced with roads and public transport.

North Straddie

Only a short ferry ride from Brisbane’s bayside, North Stradbroke Island is an oasis of coastal beauty. It’s also one of Queensland’s best on-land whale watching spots during the season, with turtles, rays, and dolphins often spotted offshore.

Highlights include:
  • The Gorge Walk – A 1.2 km self-guided track offering sweeping headland views and a prime vantage point for spotting marine life.
  • Aboriginal Culture – Join a Goompi Trail or Yura Tour with a local Quandamooka guide to learn about the ancient history, bush tucker, and cultural traditions of the region.
  • Lakes – Swim in the tea-tree infused waters of Brown Lake (Bummiera), or enjoy the serenity of Blue Lake (a sacred site, so swimming is not permitted).
  • Dining – From fresh seafood to sunny cafes and waterfront bars, North Straddie’s dining scene is full of flavour.
  • Beaches – Relax or surf at Cylinder Beach, Main Beach, and other golden stretches of sand.

South Straddie

Lesser-known than its northern neighbour, South Stradbroke Island is a peaceful haven just off the Gold Coast. With more than 30 km of pristine white beaches—including a 22 km surf break—it’s a must for surfers and nature lovers alike.

Activities include surfing, swimming, bushwalking, boating, fishing, and wildlife watching. Keep an eye out for the Golden Wallaby, found only on South Straddie, along with hundreds of bird species, dolphins, dugongs, and migrating whales.

While provisions are more limited here, you’ll find bars and restaurants at Couran Cove Island Resort, or enjoy a relaxed meal at Tipplers Licensed Café, perfect for dine-in or take-out.

Where to Stay

Both North and South Stradbroke Island offer a range of campgrounds, giving you the chance to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean and wake up in paradise. For more information, check out Caravanning Queensland
