Victoria is famed for its world-class sporting events, iconic road trips, alpine experiences and so much more. But outside of the main attractions of Melbourne, the Grampians and the Great Ocean Road, Victoria is full of hidden treasures just waiting to be explored. That’s why we’ve started our new series ‘Hidden Gems of Victoria’ to showcase all the scenic secrets you may have missed.
First up in the highlights reel: Lake Tyrrell in the heart of the Mallee region.

Lake Tyrrell is a 120,000-year-old salt lake, famous for its otherworldly, mirror-like surface. It’s often described as one of the most unique and visually striking places to visit in Victoria—perhaps even in all of Australia.
By day, its salt-crusted surface reflects hues of pink, while sunset brings bursts of orange, blue, and purple across the sky. At night, Lake Tyrrell transforms into a stargazer’s paradise, with clear, dark skies offering breathtaking views of the Southern Hemisphere’s constellations. Fittingly, the name Tyrrell is derived from the Boorong people’s word “direl”, meaning sky.
The lake has a viewing platform, boardwalk and amenities block so you can be comfortable as you walk amongst the stars and get lost in the galaxy of this natural wonder.
Lake Tyrrell is located around four hours from Melbourne and just 7km north of the town of Sea Lake, where you’ll find a range of caravan and camping options. If you’re looking for more variety, the region is also less than two hours from Swan Hill, which offers a broader selection of accommodation—including BIG4 Riverside Swan Hill, BIG4 Swan Hill, Hilltop Resort, and Lake Boga Caravan Park.
So, what are you waiting for? Take the road less travelled and discover more of Victoria’s regional treasures.
