The Northern Territory is home to some of Australia’s most awe-inspiring landscapes—from ancient gorges and rugged desert ranges to tropical waterfalls and rich Aboriginal culture. While many travellers flock to the Territory’s iconic landmarks, there are countless lesser-known places waiting to be discovered.

Our ‘Hidden Gems’ series is here to shine a light on some of these extraordinary destinations. Next up: N’Dhala Gorge Nature Park, a remarkable cultural and natural treasure hidden within the East MacDonnell Ranges.

Located around 90 kilometres east of Alice Springs, N’Dhala Gorge Nature Park—known traditionally as Ilwentje—is one of Central Australia’s most significant archaeological sites. Tucked amongst the rugged beauty of the East MacDonnell Ranges, this sacred site protects thousands of ancient rock carvings created by the Arrernte people over thousands of years.

Spread throughout the gorge are almost 6,000 individual petroglyphs carved into the sandstone rock faces. Some are believed to date back as far as 10,000 years, offering a fascinating glimpse into one of the oldest continuing cultures in the world. Many carvings are connected to important Arrernte stories and traditions, including the Caterpillar Dreaming (Yeperenye).

A 1.5-kilometre marked walking track winds through the gorge, with interpretive signage helping visitors understand the cultural significance of the site and the unique techniques used to create the engravings. Keep an eye out for rare native plants, striking layered rock formations, and local birdlife including parrots, honeyeaters, finches and kingfishers.

N’Dhala Gorge is also an unforgettable outback driving experience. The drive into the gorge follows corrugated roads along the Ross River and is best suited to 4WD vehicles. Along the way, you may even spot wild horses, camels and grazing cattle roaming the red desert landscape.
