Tasmania is filled with incredible natural wonders, from rugged mountain ranges and ancient rainforests to dramatic coastlines and hidden underground worlds. While many travellers flock to the island’s iconic destinations, there are still countless lesser-known treasures waiting to be explored.
Our Hidden Gems series continues with one of Tasmania’s most fascinating natural attractions: Mole Creek Karst National Park and Caves. Hidden beneath the state’s north-west lies a spectacular underground landscape shaped over millions of years.
Located on the slopes of the Great Western Tiers, around one hour from Launceston or Devonport, Mole Creek Karst National Park protects an internationally significant karst system filled with caves, sinkholes, underground streams and limestone formations. In fact, more than 300 known caves exist beneath this remarkable region.
Mole Creek National Park is home to two of Tasmania’s most impressive public caves—Marakoopa Cave and King Solomons Cave—each offering a completely different underground experience.
Marakoopa Cave is famous for its magical glow worms, the largest display in any public-access cave in Australia. Guided tours take visitors through enormous caverns, past sparkling crystals, flowing streams, towering stalactites and the breathtaking chamber known as the Great Cathedral. The sound of running water echoes throughout the cave, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
King Solomons Cave is smaller and drier, but equally spectacular, with richly decorated interiors, striking limestone formations and beautiful contrasting colours throughout the cave system. Delicate shawls, stalactites and stalagmites create a vibrant underground display that feels almost otherworldly.

Above ground, the national park also offers beautiful rainforest walks, waterfalls and scenic trails through the surrounding wilderness. The nearby Westmorland Falls Trail and Sensation Gorge track are popular options for those wanting to explore more of the region’s lush natural beauty.
While there are no camping facilities within the national park itself, there are several fantastic holiday parks and accommodation options nearby, including:
So, what are you waiting for? Add Mole Creek Karst National Park and Caves to your Tasmania bucket list and uncover one of the island’s most extraordinary hidden worlds.
