Queensland is home to some of Australia’s most iconic natural attractions—from tropical islands and ancient rainforests to rugged outback landscapes and coastal wonders. But hidden beneath the surface are lesser-known destinations packed with history, adventure and natural beauty.
Our Hidden Gems series continues with one of Central Queensland’s most fascinating attractions: Capricorn Caves. Located just north of Rockhampton, this incredible limestone cave system offers unforgettable underground experiences surrounded by peaceful Australian bushland.
Located just 23 kilometres north of Rockhampton, Capricorn Caves is Queensland’s oldest tourist attraction, welcoming visitors since the 1880s. The caves themselves were formed almost 400 million years ago from an ancient coral reef, creating a spectacular network of limestone chambers, narrow passageways and above-ground cave systems.
One of the highlights of the experience is the stunning Cathedral Cave. Featuring incredible natural acoustics and easy-access walkways, this breathtaking chamber is suitable for visitors of all ages and abilities, including wheelchair-accessible tours. Adventurous visitors can also explore deeper sections of the cave system on the Capricorn Explorer and Capricorn Adventurer tours, which include narrow squeezes, headlamps and spectacular summit views.
Capricorn Caves is also home to an abundance of native wildlife and endangered species, with experienced local guides sharing fascinating stories about the geology, ecology and history of this unique landscape. Throughout the experience, visitors can discover ancient fossils, towering limestone formations and hidden cave passages etched into the rock over millions of years.

Beyond the caves themselves, the surrounding property offers a relaxing bushland escape nestled within 80 acres of native Australian landscape. Guests can cool off in the swimming pool, enjoy a meal at the licensed café, or simply unwind beneath the stars surrounded by wallabies and native birdlife.
The nearby city of Rockhampton also offers plenty to explore, from the Fitzroy River and Botanic Gardens to the Mount Archer boardwalk and the region’s famous steak houses and heritage streetscapes.

Visitors can stay onsite at Capricorn Caves Tourist Park, which offers caravan sites and self-contained cabins surrounded by peaceful bushland. There are also several fantastic caravan park options throughout the wider Capricorn Coast region, including nearby hubs such as Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Emu Park and Keppel Sands.
So, what are you waiting for? Add Capricorn Caves to your Queensland travel list and uncover one of Central Queensland’s most extraordinary hidden adventures.
