Category: Inspiration, News, Date: 22 May 2026

New South Wales is home to an incredible mix of landscapes, from pristine beaches and rolling wine regions to ancient rainforests and rugged outback plains. But beyond the state’s well-known destinations are hidden gems waiting to be explored.

Our Hidden Gems series continues with one of regional NSW’s most spectacular natural wonders: Warrumbungle National Park. Famous for its dramatic volcanic landscapes and breathtaking night skies, this remarkable destination offers unforgettable adventures both day and night.

Located near Coonabarabran in Central West NSW, Warrumbungle National Park is a striking landscape formed millions of years ago by an extinct shield volcano. Jagged rock formations rise sharply above forested plains and deep gorges, creating one of the most unique natural environments in the country.

The park is perhaps best known as Australia’s first Dark Sky Park, making it one of the premier stargazing destinations in the world. Free from artificial light pollution, the skies above the Warrumbungles come alive after dark, offering crystal-clear views of the Milky Way, planets and constellations.

The nearby town of Coonabarabran—known as the Astronomy Capital of Australia—is home to several incredible observatories. Visit the famous Siding Spring Observatory to see Australia’s largest optical telescopes, or experience an unforgettable night sky tour at Milroy Observatory.

There are also plenty of shorter walks and scenic lookouts throughout the park, along with opportunities to spot native wildlife including kangaroos, wedge-tailed eagles, wallabies and colourful parrots.
