Hidden in WA’s Wheatbelt region, roughly 350 km southeast of Perth, you’ll discover the ancient natural wonder of Wave Rock. This curved, multi-coloured granite formation resembles a massive wave about to crash. Standing 15 metres high and 110 metres long—and formed over 2.7 billion years ago—it’s easy to see why Wave Rock should be your next road trip destination out of Perth.

Take the scenic four-hour drive from Perth and you’ll pass rolling hills, picturesque farmland, and, in spring, colourful wildflowers. The rock itself makes for a picture-perfect backdrop, and you can walk along both the top and base to fully appreciate the sheer size and natural beauty of this iconic landmark.
But there’s more to explore in the area. A short 1.7 km loop from the car park leads you past Wave Rock to another fascinating formation: Hippo’s Yawn, a rock structure resembling the open mouth of a hippopotamus. Not far beyond, discover the mysterious Mulka’s Cave, home to more than 450 ancient Aboriginal rock paintings that share local Dreaming stories and cultural heritage.
Another unique attraction nearby is the salt pool, located just 800 m from Wave Rock. Here, you can float and soak in Dead Sea-style saltwater—a relaxing and unusual outback experience.
Also worth a detour is the Tin Horse Highway, a quirky roadside attraction featuring over 70 colourful tin and metal horses, each with its own character and story.
Spring is a particularly lovely time to visit the Wheatbelt, when more than 2,500 varieties of wildflowers bloom across the region. You’ll see carpets of purple dampiera, orange grevilleas, yellow cassia, and other vibrant native blooms. After a day of wildflower spotting, wind down at one of the region’s popular wineries, many of which offer tastings and local produce.
Stay just moments from the rock at Wave Rock Caravan Park, which offers a pool, large grassy areas, a playground, and a spacious camp kitchen—everything you need for a comfortable and convenient base.
There’s so much natural beauty waiting to be explored in greater WA—start discovering it now!
