Fishing with IFISH Host Paul Worsteling

Did you know that people who go fishing are twice as likely to go caravanning and camping than those who don’t? It’s hardly a surprise when you see the synergy of the two activities – getting back to nature, and experiencing its bounty all in the one beautiful spot.

IFISH with Paul Worsteling

Paul Worsteling, host of the popular IFISH with Tackleworld TV show loves caravanning and camping, not just for the fishing he finds in more remote areas, but for the camaraderie present in caravan holiday parks.

“It’s all about the people you meet along the way. I always say that fishing is a vehicle that takes you places and helps you meet new faces. This is magnified when caravanning and camping because you tend to live in a community environment that forces you to enjoy other peoples company,” said Paul.

Paul, his wife Cristy, and their son just got back from a great camping trip in between filming.  “There is just something amazing about how relaxing camping can be. I love it and reckon its one of the best family orientated activities you can do,” said Paul.

“I have had so many great camping and fishing trip memories. One that pops to mind was a recent trip to Wentwort NSW fishing for the mighty Murray Cod.”

“We camped on the shoreline of the river, had a campfire and did bacon and eggs on the barbie for brekkie.”

“In two days we caught six Murray Cod and most of them were in the 25 – 35 pound bracket,” Paul recalls.

“To me that’s what life is all about. Returning to the caravan holiday park and reliving the days activities around the fire.”

To help you realise the beauty of the camping fishing trip, Paul has highlighted some of the best spots around the country.

Places to Stay

NSW Forster-Tuncurry

STAY: BIG4 Forster–Tuncurry Great Lakes Holiday Park

Right on the shore of the picturesque Wallis lake, the Great Lakes Caravan Park offers the very best in holiday accommodation, at prices to suit all budgets. Whether you decide to stay in one of the Deluxe Lake View bungalows, or simply find a nice shady place to pitch a tent, you will not be disappointed! With a boat ramp right on site, exploring the waterways of this gorgeous environment couldn’t be easier!

“I love fishing the lake system here for flathead, bream and luderick. The key is to fish around structure and use the tide to your advantage,” says Paul.

QLD Fraser Island

STAY: Fraser Lodge Holiday Park

Escape to award winning Fraser Lodge Resort and Holiday Park, the perfect location to base yourself whilst exploring the many wonders of Hervey Bay. This family friendly resort offers a fantastic range of facilities and activities, and offers an extensive range of accommodation and camping, caravan and motorhome sites are also available.

“What an incredible place. One of my favourites in Australia, with fishing options galore! The tailor are the stand out for me and the big tip here is to fish into the evening when most anglers have had enough and gone home for the day – that’s when the big fish come out to play!” says Paul.

VIC Mallacoota

STAY: Mallacoota’s Shady Gully Caravan Park

Set amongst six acres of natural parkland, come and enjoy the abundant wildlife, beaches, peace and tranquility. Conveniently located 1 km from the town centre, minutes from the Mallacoota Inlet, surf beaches and surrounded by the Croajingolong National Park.

“I spent so much time here as a teenager on family holidays with my mum and dad. The fishing is so diverse. From the massive flathead, bream, mulloway and tailor in the Lakes to gummy sharks, tuna and Mako sharks offshore. The key to catching fish in this system is to target a particular species to try and narrow down the odds. It covers a huge area and can become very overwhelming,” is Paul’s advice.

WA Exmouth

STAY: Exmouth Cape Holiday Park

Situated 1270kms north of Perth, Exmouth is blessed with a fantastic dry and warm climate all year round with no wet season. Exmouth Cape Holiday Park offers a range of accommodation to provide the perfect sanctuary within this remote and rugged wonderland. Guests can choose from cabins, chalets and powered caravan sites, backpackers’ and campers’ facilities.

“This is one of my favourite places in the WORLD! I have had many great memories here with my family and friends and have caught some incredible fish. If you like species such as Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Spanish Mackerel, Marlin, and Swordfish, then you to will love this part of the world. Local knowledge is the key in this area. Learn as much as you can before you get there and do all you can to get some good GPS marks, you wont be disappointed,” said Paul.

SA Port Vincent

STAY: Port Vincent Foreshore Caravan Park

Situated on the absolute beachfront overlooking a beautiful sheltered bay, this park’s unique position on Surveyor Point provides access on one side to a beach that is excellent for swimming and other aquatic activities, and on the other side perfect for fishing, crabbing and birdlife observations. Being an easy 2 hours drive (190kms) from Adelaide makes it a popular weekend getaway.

“This little gem has so much to offer for people who love bread and butter species such as King George Whiting, Snapper and Blue Swimmer Crabs. You don’t have to go a long way offshore and there are some excellent land based options as well. On a recent trip we went crabbing on Kayaks and had an absolute blast,” said Paul.

TAS Burnie

STAY: Burnie Holiday Caravan Park

The park is located in Burnie, a port city of Tasmania that was originally settled as Emu Bay. Just outside your door, a few yards out the front is a secluded beach front where you can soak in the rays or participate in any number of ocean side activities.

“I just love Tasmania because it always impresses me. On a recent trip to Burnie I caught beautiful Brown Trout to a kilo and Flathead to over 3 kilos on soft plastics, Australian Salmon to 3 kilos and King George Whiting to 52cm on soft plastics! It is like I imagine many places on the mainland would have been 20-30 years ago. Watch the weather in this area and fish for trout or fish land based when it’s 50/50. A fish is not worth your safety,” advises Paul.
