Exploring Karlu Karlu: NT’s Iconic Outback Landmark

Category: Inspiration, News, Date: 18 August 2025

In the heart of the Barkly Tablelands, around 95 km south of Tennant Creek, you’ll find one of the Northern Territory’s most iconic landscapes – Karlu Karlu, also known as the Devils Marbles.

This spectacular natural reserve is an unforgettable symbol of the Australian outback, with giant granite boulders scattered across the desert as if dropped from the sky. Formed millions of years ago, these ancient rocks continue to change over time as they slowly crack and erode, creating incredible shapes and formations.

A Place of Cultural and Natural Significance

The name Karlu Karlu is shared by the Kaytete, Warumungu, Warlpiri and Alyawarra traditional owners, and the site holds deep cultural and spiritual significance. Throughout the reserve, self-guided walking routes and informative signs offer insights into both the geology and the rich cultural heritage of the area.

Sunrise and sunset are truly magical times to visit, when the boulders glow with rich reds and golds against the desert sky. As you explore, keep an eye out for local wildlife – you might spot a black-headed goanna sunning itself, or see flocks of zebra finches and painted finches darting between the rocks.

Exploring and Staying in the Area

For those who want to stay close to the action, there’s a scenic bush campground within the reserve (book online to secure your spot). Alternatively, base yourself in Tennant Creek, where you’ll find several caravan parks – check out Caravanning NT for options.

While in the area, don’t miss Kunjarra (The Pebbles), another sacred site located north of Tennant Creek. This important place of Munga Munga Dreaming for the Warumungu people offers walking trails through its striking rock formations. Camping is not permitted, but it’s well worth a visit.
