School’s out, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to stop learning! Whether you’re currently home schooling or on a break for the Easter holidays, there are plenty of fun ways to keep kids’ minds stimulated away from the classroom and traditional lessons.
Here are a few of our favourite educational activities that you can do from home with your family right now:
Museums are one of our all-time favourite activities for all ages. There is so much to see, and many museums are making learning fun with their virtual experiences. Famous international galleries and museums like the Museum of Natural History, The Louvre, and even NASA have awesome online virtual tours that everybody will love, or you can visit artsandculture.google.com for endless options!
Podcasts are a great option for learning without having to concentrate on a screen or book, and parents might learn a thing or two as well! Some options include Tai Asks Why, Imagine This, The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel, Short and Curly and Wow in the World – just to name a few!
For the kids who might not have the patience to sit and listen to a podcast, a DIY science experiment is a great way to actively learn and have fun at the same time. You can do some with things you might already have at home in the kitchen (the old baking soda volcano is always a hit!) or you can take it to the next level and order your own science kit online – there are heaps out there and you can get them delivered right to your door.
It might not seem like it, but cooking and following a recipe can be a great way for young kids to learn. They can practice reading and comprehension while following a recipe, learn fractions with measuring cups, and get a head start on an important life skill!
If you’re working from home or short on time or resources, educational apps are an awesome teaching assistant, and there are heaps of free options too. The best ones will vary on the age of your kids, but there are some great ones on education.abc.net.au and the National Geographic website. For something different, you could download an app like Duolingo and learn a new language!
It’s an oldie but a goodie – reading! Whether you’re by the campfire or inside on the couch, whether your book is fact or fiction, whether it’s funny or serious, there is no doubt that reading is great exercise for the mind. If you’ve already worked your way through all the books in your house, you can order online, access e-books, or even write your own stories for each other to read.
