Discover Wallaman Falls: Queensland’s Towering Hidden Wonder

Category: Inspiration, News, Date: 10 December 2025

Hidden away in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area of Northern Queensland is an Aussie treasure worth the detour. At 268 metres, Wallaman Falls is the highest permanent single-drop waterfall in Australia. This breathtaking natural wonder flows year-round and offers world-class scenery surrounded by tranquil rainforest — some of the oldest on Earth.

If this stop isn’t already on your Tropical North bucket list, add it now!

Located roughly 51 km southwest of Ingham in Girringun National Park, Wallaman Falls is truly a sight to behold. With thundering water, mist spray and a refreshing cool breeze (especially in the wetter months), the falls has to be seen to be appreciated. The area forms part of the traditional lands of the Warrgamaygan people and holds deep cultural significance.

Visitors can view the falls from the main lookout or take the 800 m Bangguruu Walk through ancient rainforest to tranquil waterholes and rock pools. The surrounding region is teeming with birdlife and is home to many endangered plants and animals, making it an ideal stop for nature lovers.

For more experienced hikers, the 2-day Wet Tropics Circuit Walk offers a 37.5 km trek through palm gullies and dense rainforest. Alternatively, the shorter Djyinda Walk (3.2 km return) provides a rewarding challenge — steep in sections with a tough ascent and descent.

The nearby town of Ingham is affectionately known as “Little Italy,” offering visitors a taste of Italian life in northern Queensland. Thanks to its large Italian-descendant community, the region boasts a unique blend of culture, fresh produce and authentic cuisine. Think great coffee, handmade pasta, quality smallgoods and lush green landscapes.

Other nearby regions include Hinchinbrook, a major hub of Australia’s sugar cane industry and home to Hinchinbrook Island and the Hinchinbrook Way Walk — both popular with outdoor enthusiasts.
