Melbourne to Wangaratta

The Great Alpine Road begins in the vibrant city of Wangaratta, a gateway to the Victorian high country and alpine regions. The city is home to hidden watefalls, award-winning wineries and a renowned jazz festival, held annually in November, which is worth planning your trip around. The drive from Melbourne to Wangaratta should take under three hours and passes through charming Victorian towns such as Seymour and Benalla.

Wangaratta to Bright

Kicking off the Northern leg of the Great Alpine Road, head south towards Bright. Along the way you will encounter spectacular scenery, fine wineries and delicious local produce.  Some great cellar doors include Gapsted Estate and Ringer Reef Winery. Breathe in the crisp mountain air as you journey along this picturesque route. We recommend stopping at the charming gold rush town of Beechworth and the warm Myrtleford for a delightful afternoon.

Make sure you take time to explore Mount Buffalo National Park. With beautiful waterfalls, scenic lookouts and great guided adventures, Bright serves as a great base to discover this alpine region.

Between Bright and Omeo, you can explore Alpine National Park and Mt. Hotham, Victoria’s highest Alpine village. Here you’ll be treated to spectacular mountain landscapes and wide-open grasslands. In Spring, witness the highplains fill with colourful wildflowers. After exploring these beautiful mountains, make your way to the old gold town of Omeo.
