External appliance Gas Hoses and Bayonet Fittings

The Energy Safety Regulator in Western Australia has issued a ban on a gas hose designed for a cooker “drawer” which can be purchased for use in utes and 4WD’s.

What’s the problem?

  1. The gas regulator end of the hose connects to the cylinder, BUT, the “appliance end”, is an unsealed (open) male plug fitting.
  2. Therefore, when the hose is disconnected from the cooker, gas can flow when cylinder valve is open.

This has caused some confusion among caravan owners concerned about their external gas appliances.

My caravan has an external BBQ or slide-out kitchen with a hose fitting – is it safe?

Yes, your caravan installation is safe.

The safety notice and recall does not relate to caravan installations.

Gas bayonet fittings on a caravan are installed by a qualified gas fitter, in line with Australian Standard AS/NZS 5601.2:2020.

Gas bayonet arrangements in a caravan installation have the socket (female) part of the gas bayonet mounted to the caravan structure, connected to the pipe run from the gas cylinder(s).  This is the part of the bayonet fitting that contain a gas shut-off, preventing the flow of gas when the hose is disconnected from the caravan.

These socket fittings have a gas shut-off function that stops the flow of gas when the hose is removed.

How can I check my caravan fittings?

If you are concerned about your caravan barbeque or slide-out kitchen, you can check for the following:

1. The hose from the appliance has a plug (male) fitting looking something like the following:

Note: this is the hose that is connected to your BBQ or slide out kitchen (or other external gas appliance).

2. The connection point into the caravan has a socket (female) fitting looking something like the following:

These socket fittings have a gas shut-off function that stops the flow of gas when the hose is removed.

Summary:

If your slide-out kitchen or BBQ hose connects to a socket (female) bayonet fitting mounted on the caravan, you do NOT have a banned product.
