Category: Inspiration, News, Date: 13 July 2026

The Limestone Coast is one of South Australia’s most underrated regions for a winter escape. The drive from Robe to Beachport is made for travellers who like to take things slow and enjoy the journey just as much as the destination. Think quiet beach walks, cosy cabins, warm cafés and nights spent around the campfire. It’s the kind of place where you can breathe in the fresh sea air, enjoy local flavours and find a little winter adventure along the way.

There is something special about exploring this stretch of the coast during the cooler months. The beaches are quieter, the roads feel calmer and there is no need to rush from one stop to the next. You can spend the morning wandering through Robe, sit on the sand and listen to the waves, or make your way towards Beachport with no real timeline other than enjoying the day as it comes.

Start your escape in Robe

Start your escape in Robe, one of the Limestone Coast’s most loved seaside towns. In winter, Robe has a peaceful charm that makes it easy to slow down and settle in. Pick up a warm drink from Union Café, before browsing local shops and checking out Karatta Wine Room & Gallery heading out to explore the coastline.

Long Beach is a beautiful place to visit, especially in the cooler months. Rug up in a warm jacket, find a quiet spot on the sand and take a moment to listen to the waves roll along the shoreline. For more of an elevated coastal view, head to the Robe Obelisk and nearby Cape Dombey lookouts. In winter, the rugged coastline feels even more peaceful, making it the perfect place to pause and enjoy the ocean without the summer crowds.

Food lovers can add one of Robe’s favourites to their day by stopping into Robe Bakery & Coffee Lounge for morning tea, freshly baked bread and a sweet treat to enjoy on their travels.

For travellers wanting a little more adventure, the Robe to Beachport 4WD track is a must-do for experienced 4WD travellers. With sandy dune tracks mixed in with some beach driving, it is a memorable way to experience the Limestone Coast from a different perspective. Before setting off, check local conditions, tides and access requirements, and make sure you are travelling with a suitable 4WD vehicle and recovery gear.
