Best Surfing Spots in Queensland

Category: Inspiration, News, Date: 14 February 2025

Queensland is well-known for its sandy coastlines, warm waters and generally relaxed vibes all round. What you might not know is that it is also home to some of the best surfing opportunities Australia has to offer. QLD’s surf scene has something for everyone, whether you’re a beginner or a pro—from the legendary swell of Snapper Rocks to the beautiful waves of Noosa.

Here are some of the best spots around the sunshine state to get your surf on:

Coolum, Sunshine Coast

Coolum beach is a surfing hub, known for producing some of the best waves of the Sunshine Coast. The main beach is home to the Three Bays, which offer the perfect sheltered swells for beginner and intermediate surfers to enjoy. What we love most about surfing at Coolum is the relaxed atmosphere, vast stretch of beach and generally less competitive environment than the nearby Noosa.

Enjoy a day of cruisey beach breaks, warm waters and charming coastal cafés at this fantastic spot.

Kirra, Gold Coast

On the Southern GC, Kirra is one of the top spots for surfing in Queensland. Known for its great all-year surf, when the conditions are right these may just be some of the best waves of your year. While it can get pretty busy here, there are a number of epic breaks to choose from including the iconic Snapper Rocks.

Winter and Spring are particularly good times to enjoy a gnarly right-hand point in these spots and be sure to check out some of the delicious dining options along the seafront.

Moreton Island (Mulgumpin)

For a one-of-a-kind, off-grid surfing experience, you need to head out to Moreton Island of the coast of Brisbane. This spot is great for a weekend camping trip and offers the surfing experiences to make it worthwhile. Think 4WD sand driving, remote right-hand breaks and tropical island vibes. Perfect!

For experienced surfers only, due to the remote and unpredictable conditions. Top spots at Moreton include the challenging North Point and the local favourite, Boulders.

North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah)

North Stradbroke Island is a must-visit Queensland spot for everyone, but it’s especially great for those who want to hit the waves. Main Beach at Point Lookout offers the best surfing on the island, with consistent year-round conditions. The surf here is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers, as the swells can be intense and rips aren’t uncommon.

For a beginner friendly surf, head to Cylinder Beach. Here you’ll find a more sheltered, relaxed surf that’s still great to get your board on.

Noosa, Sunshine Coast

Last but definitely not least, Noosa is arguably the ‘mecca’ of Australian surfing. The 4km coastline from North Sunshine Beach around the National Park headland and up to the Noose River mouth makes up the 10th World Surfing Reserve and its reputation is definitely well-known. Noosa Main Beach can get pretty busy, so we recommend exploring the countless points and breaks on offer in Noosa National Park.

Pro Tip: Take a day trip out to Double Point Island and enjoy a hidden surfing paradise with sandy break points, pristine headlands and uncrowded waters!
