Boasting an impressive coastline of over 12,500kms, Western Australia is a surfers paradise. The crystal-clear waters, white, long sandy beaches and consistent waves, make it a popular spot to catch a wave. It doesn’t hurt that you might see some spectacular marine-life while you’re at it.
Here are some of our top surfing spots in Western Australia (WA) for you to enjoy:
When you think of Margaret River, you might think of acres of Vineyard and a full-bodied red, but the region is also internationally renowned for its surf breaks and is home to the popular Margaret River Pro.
Surfers Point, where the Pro is held, is known as one of the best ‘big wave’ locations on the planet! A short drive up the road and you’ll find a world class right barrel at North Point or you can venture down to South Point for a more intermediate friendly surf.
A surf off Rottnest Island has to be one of the greatest surfing adventures on offer. Not only is the island a world-class destination in itself, but it also offers some stunning hidden surfing gems you won’t be quick to forget. All breaks on the island are reef breaks, with Strickland Bay being the most famous. Strickland has been a popular choice in the past for international, national and state level surfing events, however it is best suited to more experienced surfers.
Nearby Mary Cove is a great option for a beginner/intermediate friendly surf. This more sheltered spot has a great left hand break.
Although it might seem like a trek to get here (if you’re travelling from Perth), trust us— it’s worth it! Kalbarri is known for its epic left-hand point breaks, particularly at Jakes Point. This national surfing reserve is best for experienced surfers however, nearby Jakes Bay is a great alternative for beginners.
Other notable spots in Kalbarri include Blue Holes and Chinaman’s Beach.
Ningaloo is a popular Western Australia surfing spot for good reason. The Ningaloo (Nyinggulu) Coastal Reserve offers some fantastic surfing opportunities especially at Tombstones, Turtles and Gnarloo Bay.
Tombstones has a strong left-hander and year-round riding opportunities, whereas the more chilled out waves of Gnarloo Bay are a nice contrast.
A hidden gem off WA’s northcoast, the Montebello Islands offer one of the most unique, remote surfing opportunities in Australia. With both a short & strong left-hand break and a longer, more consistent right-hand break, it is one of the few places in Australia to enjoy impressive reef breaks, all to yourself!
