Australia is home to many incredible food and wine regions. Head west and the Margaret River region is often at the top of the must-do list for travellers. But did you know you can venture just a short 30-minute drive east of Perth to explore gourmet dining experiences and award-winning wineries?
The Swan Valley offers the perfect day trip or weekend getaway for anyone travelling to or through Perth. It will be a big tick in the box if you are a
✔ Wine connoisseur
✔ Foodie
✔ Outdoor enthusiast
✔ Or just love a destination you can really explore!
Not only is the area home to incredible local produce, award-winning wineries, breweries and distilleries, beautiful scenery including idyllic vineyards, rolling hills and nature reserves, but as one of Australia’s oldest wine regions, you can discover its rich history, with a blend of European and Indigenous heritage.
There are so many renowned wineries and breweries to visit! A wine tour by coach is the best way to sample a good selection of venues and products if you only have one day available. You will find over 40 wineries in the area, including premium wines like Sandalford and Pinelli Estate. For beer and spirit enthusiasts, enjoy breweries and distilleries offering local brews, ciders, and spirits such as gin and whisky. Old Young’s Distillery and Sin Gin Distillery are favourites.
Take the time to enjoy lunch at any one of the many incredible restaurants but make sure you book ahead on weekends, public holidays and school holidays. For a casual afternoon, you can’t go past the Lawn at Mandoon Estate on the weekend – enjoy live and local music, great food (order a picnic hamper from the deli and enjoy with your wine or beer), plus a fully-enclosed playground for the kids. You can also stroll down to the riverbank of the Swan River. It’s the perfect laid-back winery afternoon.
Of course, this is the perfect opportunity to select some great wines to enjoy on the rest of your trip! You’ll thank yourself later, when you are savouring a glass around the campfire in more remote locations. There is also local organic produce on offer, like jams and honey as well as handmade art for the perfect souvenir or gift for those you’ve left behind while on your travels!
A must-do for dessert lovers – Mondo Nougat and Margaret River Chocolate Co. Plus, pop into The House of Honey & Sticky Spoon Café for their honey-rich delights.
The Swan Valley is extraordinary year-round! With a diverse and exciting events calendar it is well worth seeing what’s on when you are planning to visit.
If you are looking to immerse yourself in the full experience, Discovery Parks – Swan Valley puts you in the heart of the area, set amongst the vineyards.
Or, base yourself centrally in Perth at Perth Central Caravan Park or Karrinyup Waters Resort, and take the day off driving while you enjoy a wine tour by coach.
