Conquer the Binns Track: The NT’s Hidden Outback Road Trip

Category: Inspiration News Road To A Million RoadtoaMillion2526 Date: 17 Oct 2025

Embark on one of the Northern Territory’s most epic and lesser-known outback adventures — the Binns Track. Winding through some of the NT’s most spectacular scenery, remote national parks and character-filled towns, this iconic 4WD journey reveals hidden treasures, vibrant colours, native wildlife and incredible geological formations.

Named after NT Parks & Wildlife ranger Bill Binns, the track stretches from Mount Dare on the SA/NT border all the way to Timber Creek near the WA border, traversing a staggering variety of landscapes and ecosystems.

Your adventure begins at Mount Dare, skirting the western edge of the Simpson Desert en route to Alice Springs. Be awestruck by the towering 5–8m red sand dunes and take time to explore the beauty of Alice Springs — soar above the West MacDonnell Ranges on a sunrise hot air balloon ride, meet local reptiles at the Alice Springs Reptile Centre, or uncover the region’s unique desert habitats at the Alice Springs Desert Park

Next, immerse yourself in the dramatic gorges, waterholes and hiking trails of the West MacDonnell Ranges, then venture east to the lesser-known East MacDonnell Ranges where you can witness ancient Arrernte rock art at Emily and Jessie Gaps Nature Park

Continue north to Gemtree, where you can fossick for semi-precious stones and pass through historic gold rush towns steeped in pioneer heritage. Further along, Iytwelepenty / Davenport Ranges National Park offers outstanding 4WD trails, stargazing beneath clear outback skies, and the chance to spot native wildlife in its natural habitat.

Don’t miss the striking Karlu Karlu / Devil’s Marbles, an iconic NT landmark not far from Tennant Creek. This fascinating outback town is rich in Aboriginal culture and gold mining history — a great place to learn more about the traditional owners and early settlers who shaped the region.

From here, the Binns Track continues through vast cattle stations and arid landscapes toward the majestic escarpments of Judbarra / Gregory National Park. Here you can enjoy Barramundi fishing, explore the limestone landscapes and soak up the serenity beneath ancient Boab trees.

The journey concludes in Timber Creek, where you can discover the region’s heritage at the historic Timber Creek Police Station, built in 1898.

For the ultimate outback adventure — filled with red desert landscapes, wildlife encounters, cultural experiences and endless horizons — the Binns Track is an unforgettable way to experience the real Northern Territory.
