The Stuart family are currently enjoying an amazing trip through Tasmania, and making the most of a holiday package won through Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s Reconnecting is Key Competition. They are sharing their adventure with us via blog and photos! Here’s their itinerary for Cradle Mountain to Queenstown.
So we left Cradle Mountain with an appreciation of the rugged mountains and the wildlife that calls it home. Back in our Apollo camper and off to Queenstown we went. What a different landscape this little town sits in.
Mountains all around but so different to Cradle Mountain and an obvious high pain threshold for the local AFL players as the ground surface is gravel and not grass! Also, hats off to them for toughing it out waiting for the mine to get back into full swing again.
In the meantime we were delighted to experience a bygone era by going on the local steam train at the West Coast Wilderness Railway. Really well organised by super friendly people whose skills in keeping this little railway operational with steam engines and fully renovated carriages on a specially designed railway track with rack and pinion system to climb these mountains.
Great experience and the passengers were all fully engaged in the local stories and history from our guide Ashlea. We were even able to try our hand at panning for gold at one of the stops. We’re not able to retire just yet, unfortunately!
We’re nearing the end of our trip with our sights set on a big day of travel to Hobart soon but not without a few stops along the way of course!
