Scenic Drives: The Great Ocean Road

< Inspiration / Category: Road Trips / Tags: Victoria

Check off one of the most scenic drives in Australia, the Great Ocean Road. The Great Ocean Road stretches across 243 kilometers westward, starting at Torquay and ending at Allansford. The drive is around 9.5 hours, making it possible to do it in one coffee-fueled trip. Or, stay at one of the cosy caravan parks along the way. The drive hugs cliff sides, stretches along Australia’s famous south coastline and boasts green forestry and wildlife. Being over 80 years old and the largest War Memorial in the world, it is definitely a bucket list adventure.

If you’re wanting to smash the drive out in one day, leaving as early as 7am is recommended. This way you can catch the views in all their glory, and still leaves you plenty of time to check into accommodation in Allansford. Kennett River is a popular camping destination if you’re wanting to stretch this trip out.

Great Ocean Road cafes

Lorne is the perfect first-stop destination, with bustling beaches, playgrounds, and boutiques that line the main strip. If you’re wanting to drive on for a little longer, Apollo Bay is waiting with the Great Ocean Road Brewhouse. Serving over 100 craft beers, it is the perfect place to support local and Australian independent breweries.

Reward yourself with not only a visit to the famous 12 Apostles. Add on a helicopter flight past the Shipwreck Coast and Otway Rainforest and over the monumental limestone pillars. This is recognised as one of the world’s iconic scenic flights, so you may want to save it for the second day after all those craft beers!
