The Allure of Adelaide – Alice and Jen

Alice and Jen have completed their leg of the Follow the Sun Relay section between Perth and Adelaide. Read on to learn about the final drive and their favourite parts of Adelaide city.

Port Augusta to The Remarkables

We travelled from Port Augusta to Adelaide in our Follow the Sun Relay Winnebago campervan on a journey that directly would take maximum 4 hours but we chose to stop in at The Remarkables National Park and we were not disappointed.

This National Park is expansive in its own glorious light, with mountain ranges, valleys, creeks and waterfalls there is an abundance of walking trails to explore. We knew we had a time limit as we wanted to relax in Adelaide for the afternoon so we chose a walk that would take us to a lookout but was fairly short. A 8 km hike that took us along a creek through a valley with mountain ranges towering over us on either side to a beautiful spot where we can then sit and overlook the valley we had just walked through.

When we returned to the Winnebago, we were once again so grateful to have everything we needed with us – we were able to cook a delicious breakfast in our Winnebago (then eat it amongst the emus that were wondering around the picnic area and car park), get out of our sweaty workout gear and prepare for our drive to Adelaide.

Adelaide

When we reached Adelaide, we effortlessly checked into the West Beach Parks BIG 4 and went for a stroll along the boardwalk that runs along the white sand beach that lines the beautiful green park.

The charm of Adelaide city – its wide tree lined streets, the rooftop bars, the beaches, the mountain ranges that surround the city, the churches on every corner, the architecture of the buildings – its charm is in the cities ability to blend the old with the new. Adelaide was our final destination with Byron the Winnebago for the Follow the Sun Relay. After an epic journey, Adelaide was divinely perfect to immerse ourselves slowly back into civilisation 😉 a much quieter city then its east coast brothers and sisters, it is a combination of wineries, food and lifestyle culture, smoothly integrated with rugged mountains, beaches and coastlines.

The following two days and nights before, sadly, handing back the Winnebago to Apollo were spent exploring the city and surrounds with a relaxed energy of two travellers finishing up a two week EPIC journey across two states.

To finish up, here are a few of our ‘musts’ for Adelaide and Surrounds:

  • Go to a Parkrun on a Saturday – we went to West Beach Parkrun and were welcomed with open arms. Everybody here were so nice and fun to run or walk with!
  • Enjoy strolling the shops of Rundle Mall in the city centre
  • Have a drink at a rooftop bar – we went to Cathedral Hotel rooftop bar
  • Go to the beach side suburb of Glenelg and feel like your truly on holiday – take a stroll through the streets and shops, sit at one of the many delightfully charming cafes, play and relax at the beach or sit at the beachside bar
  • Winery Regions – when visiting Adelaide, it is a must to explore the various winery regions that surround the city.
  • Stay at West Beach Parks – BIG 4
  • Victor Harbour and the Fleurieu Peninsular is any explorers paradise only 1.5 – 2 hour drive from Adelaide

This is the last blog post we write for the Follow the Sun Relay and man oh man, this has been one incredible adventure we will NEVER forget! We would like to take the opportunity to share how amazing the service at Apollo was when we picked up and dropped off the Winnebago.

We’d like to express how beautiful, easy and effortless the Winnebago made it for us to drive, explore, eat home cooked meals each day and night, have a comfy sleeps, carry our lives with us and come and go from caravan parks (Byron the ‘Bago was a dream).

Thank you also, immensely, for the beautiful parks either independent, Discovery or BIG 4 that hosted us- you were all so great! Thank you to the sponsors – Winnebago, Dometic and Apollo for playing a HUGE role in enabling the Follow the Sun Relay to occur. And with an expanding, soul-filled heart and immense gratitude, we bow down to the support and organisation of Lets Go Caravaning Camping team (Toby, Jess, Bebe) for being the amazing humans that make this happen. This was an experience of a lifetime and we really put in our 110% effort to share the message of how amazing and effortless it is to explore and cherish this country when travelling with a campervan or caravan (it is the only way to go!) We hope this was received and felt not only throughout our words and actions with the people we met but also through what we wrote here and our social media presence.

THANK YOU AGAIN!

Lots of love,

Alice and Jen xx
