Spirit of Caravanning Over the Strait – The Blackmores

< Inspiration / Category: Featured Bloggers / Tags: Travel with Kids

Things were looking up! We made it to the Spirit of Tasmania with no issues and travelled the Bass Strait in 30-40 knot winds.

Week Eighteen

There were people vomiting in bins and it was a challenge walking from A to B without swaying but thankfully we had a cabin (in our opinion an absolute must have if travelling with kids) so we spent the day watching movies on the iPad and wandering through the different places on the ship.

We docked in Devonport and stayed at a caravan park 1.5kms down the road which was perfect given we didn’t get off until 7:30pm so it would have been too big a day to get to Launceston which was our original plan. We saved that drive for the following day and ended up at a great little spot called Old Macs which is just out of the city center and close to the Hospital.

The kids were definitely due for an outing so we made a day trip to Cataract Gorge and did a short river cruise which was a big hit for Bruce.

We attempted to go to Launceston General Hospital Emergency which was where Bruce was supposed to be reviewed but it was absolute chaos and we wouldn’t have been seen for at least 6 hours all the while people were queuing up with barking coughs and vomit bags. We made the executive decision to leave as we just couldn’t risk any of us getting sick, being a nurse myself thought it would be best if I had a look myself then decide if we should head back for a medical review.

We stopped in at the chemist and picked up all the dressings and sterile dressing packs we needed then headed back to the caravan. His wounds were looking great not quite healed to the point I’d leave them uncovered but definitely improved so I re-dressed them myself and we planned our next stop.

Now when I said things come in 3’s we thought we’d well and truly met our quota but turns out our luck was not improving and we would take another hit this time it would be to do with the caravan brakes (the same ones we’d just paid $500 to have fixed by a professional). But that’s a story for next week.
