The Reeve family of Lapping Oz are next on the Follow the Sun Relay. This post is about their journey to Eden.

Eden

Eden is the first town you come through when you cross the Victorian border. It is a 3-hour approx. drive from Lakes Entrance. We took our time, swapping drivers and even boiling a kettle at a roadside rest stop for a hot brew of coffee.

NSW’s most southernly coastal town has a long history as a whaling port. We took our Winnebago into town and visited the Eden Killer Whale Museum for a few hours. At only $10 per adult and $2.50 for kids, we felt it was great value. The museum tells the story of Old Tom, a killer whale who assisted humans, by luring other whales in to Two Fold Bay for slaughter.

There was a great deal of information about Eden’s heritage as a fishing port and its transition to one of the jewels of the Sapphire Coast. There are several vantage points to witness whales playing and feeding in Two Fold Bay and the Eden Killer Whale Museum sounds a siren to alert everyone. If you’d like to see these giants up close, the whale watching cruises operate from September to November.

Two Fold Bay is the third deepest natural harbour in the Southern hemisphere and the wharf is being extended to accommodate huge cruise ships. After our museum visit, we ordered a seafood basket from the takeaway shop at the wharf precinct. A 2-minute drive had us up the road and having lunch with spectacular ocean views!

During our time here, the annual amateur fishing competition was happening and word on the street was that the marlin was on!

The Eden Big 4 Holiday Park had been steadily filling up with keen fishermen and their serious looking boats, as they pursued the $50,00 in cash and prizes. There was a great sense of community in the park, people came from all over NSW and Victoria to participate in the fishing competition.

We had a magic two days in Eden, the people we met were so friendly and we would love to return to experience the Eden Whale Festival, held the first weekend in November.
