Wander to Wonder Oz sets off for another leg of the Follow the Sun Relay. Read on to see what the Davey family gets up to in Broome!
This week we arrived at our final stop on the #FTSRelay – beautiful Broome! Famous for its rich pearling history and epic sunsets on Cable Beach, the town has a laid back multicultural vibe that offers both action packed adventures and pristine wilderness.
We stayed at Discovery Parks Broome, which is the only park in Broome located on a beach. We even snagged ourselves a waterfront site that we liked to call a ‘Broome with a view!’ It was amazing to look out the Winnebago windows and see turquoise coloured waters set against the red rocks, white sands and green mangroves. WOW!
The park is conveniently located on Town Beach where there is a great playground and splash park for the kids, which we put to good use during our stay!
Our arrival at Broome couldn’t have been better timed as it coincided with the first night of the Staircase to the Moon. The natural phenomenon is caused by the full moon rising over the mudflats of Roebuck Bay at low tide, resulting in the moonlight creating a staircase leading to the moon. It occurs between March to October and usually lasts three nights every month. The town sure knows how to celebrate it too, with evening markets held at Town Beach where you can grab some great food and enjoy live entertainment before and after.
One of the things we love the most about travelling with our children is the ability to educate them about wildlife and the importance of conservation and sustainability. And the best way to do this is via hands on learning and encounters!
That’s why when we read about Broome Whale Watching and the amazing eco tours they offer we jumped at the chance to spend a morning out at sea with them. Roebuck Bay was declared an Australian Marine Park in 2015. It is a diverse marine environment that is home to dugongs, turtles and the rare snubfin dolphin. During whale season you can also get up close and personal with humpback whales!
We were picked up from Discovery Parks and driven out to beautiful Roebuck Bay where an amphibian craft (or transformer boat as the kids liked to call it) ferried us to the 42” sailing catamaran where we made ourselves comfy on some bean bags down the front of the boat. It took no time at all for the crew to spot some bottlenose dolphins who briefly joined us to swim along the bow of the boat and a steady stream of snubfin dolphins, green turtles and dugongs, followed. I loved the excitement on the kids faces each time one appeared on the surface and how they soon learnt how to spot the differences between each species.
The crew were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly; going above and beyond to ensure everyone was comfortable, bringing out morning tea, fruit platters and hot and cold beverages. We really did feel very spoilt indeed. It was an amazing, relaxing and informative morning and we all learnt truckloads about the marine environment and its residents.
There is a heap to explore in town including the very pretty Streeters Jetty, which was the original jetty for pearling luggers in Broome, the Pearl Luggers museum and old Chinatown. If you’re looking for a bite to eat then we highly recommend Matso’s Brewery, their ginger and mango beer is sensational as is the Indian Curry selection!
The lovely staff at Discovery Park organised a ripper Happy Hour during our stay at their BBQ area overlooking Roebuck Bay and Town Beach. Guests enjoyed hours of live music from another fellow travelling family while knocking back some drinks and nibblies; the little wanderers made sure everyone left with a Dometic goodie bag too.
It was a great evening mingling with other travellers, capped off by watching our second Staircase to the Moon without having to move an inch. Perfect!
