We so thoroughly enjoyed our time on Bruny Island and so the decision of where to head next was tricky but we ended up leaving the beaches and heading inland.
1st stop was at a camp ground call Left of Field which is located in National Park and a stones throw to Russell Falls. We made the most of checking out the Falls but we were only there for an overnight stay although you could certainly manage more time there if you had it.
It was a quick pack up the next morning and we made the long drive to Derwent Bridge where we set up camp for the night. If you’re going to be travelling in the central highlands then you need to duck in and check out the Wall in the Wilderness, a beautifully hand crafted wall of wooden sculpture reflecting the history of the highlands which is amazingly realistic! As you are unable to take pictures or video of the wall it’s one of those places you just need to see for yourself.
After an overnight stop and dinner at the pub we packed up and headed to Port Sorell on the north coast for a little down time from driving and some needed beach time for the kids. We had thought to stay on in Port Sorell for New year but like most places they were fully booked so after a little ringing around we found ourselves heading to Low Head which would be our new year destination.
We didn’t know much about Low Head but found out that they had a fabulous fairy penguin tour that ran every night and it was worth every cent. Unlike many other tours where you are seated and watch them for a distance the Low Head tour allows you to get up close and personal with the penguins. Small groups are taken on a walking tour to watch them come out of the beach and up through the rocks then your guided to where they nest and may even have them walk over your feet as you sit quietly and watch them pass.
Colin stayed at the caravan with Bruce as I knew he was a little too young to enjoy the experience without wanting to run and pat one or just be the gregarious character he is and frighten the poor things. This turned out to be a good idea given how close we were actually able to get. For the rest of the kids though it was an experience they will never forget.
