Explore with the Reeve family of Lapping Oz while they complete their next leg on the Follow the Sun Relay. This post is about their stopover in Tathra.
A mere forty minutes’ drive North of Eden, we rolled into our next destination – Tathra.
The unique mix of the East Australian Current with the nutrient rich Antarctic current along this coastline encourages incredible biodiversity. This beach side town has one of the best snorkelling bays we’ve come across and is ideal for beginners.
Kianinny Bay has a boat ramp, fishing tables, picnic tables and amenities. Sting rays greet fishermen at the cleaning tables, and they share the bay with an abundant level of sea life. The bay is also the start of the Kangarutha coastal walk, the full length is 11 km and takes you past Boulder Bay, White Rock, Games Bay, Turingal Head and finally Wallagoot Lake Boat Club. Turingal Head is another gorgeous spot for a swim, and you can drive there, if you prefer not to walk.
The Kangarutha Walking Track is a part of Bournda National Park, one of the Sapphire Coasts best kept secrets.We caught up with local Sharri from Tathra Beach Personal Training Studio, who recommended we check out the first part of the walk. There were plenty of stairs to get to the top of the cliff, and we were rewarded with brilliant views of Kianinny Bay and beyond.
The Big 4 Tathra has wonderful staff and you can tell they really love what they do. The park has a great pool, playground, camp kitchen and the best amenities we’ve ever seen. Bike hire is available, and you can use them to explore beyond the park. It was within strolling distance from the bowling club, so we all had a nice feed there for dinner.
Tathra Hotel has undergone a huge renovation and is quite a classy place for a bevvy and a meal. The playground is surrounded by picnic tables and has amazing ocean views. A beautiful spot!
Tathra is rebuilding after a devastating bush fire event in March 2018, which destroyed more than 65 homes and buildings. The locals would love you to visit their beautiful slice of the Far South coast.
