It’s time to meet our latest travellers, Poppy and Tom! The couple live in Melbourne and love to explore as much of the country as they can. Together, they have travelled vastly throughout Victoria, Tasmania, the East coast from Cairns to Brisbane, West from Perth to Broome and taken The Ghan from Adelaide through to Darwin. They both work full-time, Tom as an electrician and Poppy in Human Resources in Local Government.
Last weekend, they picked up the motorhome and officially began their journey. Here is what they have to say so far!
A short taxi ride from the airport brought us to the Apollo Motorhomes depot in Perth. A speedy check in meant we were on the road in no time, heading south to Penguin Island. This small island is a bird lover’s paradise, home to thousands of migratory birds but best of all home to the Little Penguin! We scheduled our arrivals to coincide with feeding time of the 9 penguins in the Discovery Centre – they were so cute! These 9 penguins have been deemed unfit to return to the wild, so live a life of luxury in this great facility.
Back on the mainland we continued south to Mandurah and our first overnight stop at Mandurah Tourist Park. We’ve stayed at numerous campsites over Australia and this was the cleanest and best equipped! The staff were very friendly and accommodating making us immediately feel welcome.
The next morning, we took a short drive into Mandurah and joined a free walking tour with the Mandurah Community Museum. We were fortunate to be the only people on the tour and our guide David was a fantastic host, imparting all his knowledge on us of the local area. After the tour, David showed us through the museum which we would highly recommend! It was fascinating to see the life size model of the Mega Mouth Shark – only 3 have ever washed up on shores around the world – including one in Mandurah! Next, it was time to hop on a boat to find Mandurah’s bottle nose dolphin population. This didn’t prove difficult as they were hunting around the boat before we’d left the marina! The 1.5-hour tour took us through Mandurah’s estuaries and out to open ocean in search of more dolphins, and we were lucky enough to find several playful pods along the way!
Back at camp it was time for Happy Hour! Huge thank you to Reg and all the staff for putting on a fantastic evening, we met so many wonderful people, including one lady who had driven the Nullarbor 16 times!
