Mum and Kids Explore Cairns – Tassie2Tip

< Inspiration / Category: Featured Bloggers / Tags: Queensland Travel with Kids

Week one without my big and little boys 🙁 Talk about a sad goodbye. I felt sick saying good bye to Jack for two weeks knowing that phone reception was going to be limited although he made it easier waiting in the car an hour before departure in excitement to explore The Cape with his Dad.

So I’m playing single Muma Bear to Charlie and Elkie although I can’t really play on that one too much, as we are left behind at Australia’s number 1 kid’s caravan park – Cairns Coconut Resort. Just WOW!

On arrival you are given a tour on a golf buggy intended (and successfully) to excite the kids on the fun activities this place has to offer. Heated pools, cold pools, kid’s spa, adult’s spa (wink wink), an entire water park, indoor playground, outdoor playgrounds, gym, family bathrooms, train rides, free shuttle bus into town daily, nighty outdoor movies on the big screen, park cafĂ© (best pizza), pan cake breakfast and daily actives just to name a few.  I’m thinking by this stage we don’t even need to leave this place. This is a caravan and camping mecca for kids and adults.

To help keep me company my beautiful mother flew up for the first 6 days. We have been away for 8 weeks and crikey was I excited to see her although equally were Charlie and Elk.

Talk about fun this week! My mum is a real goer and thrives on adventure around the clock. We couldn’t hide the fact there was a circus in town, the hundreds of massive promotional clowns around Cairns brewed excitement in the kids (damn marketers) and Nanny couldn’t say no. It was great, full of animals and acrobatic stunts that had us all on the edge of our seat.

The next day we took a boat tour to the reef at Green Island. This is a must do when visiting Cairns! We caught a cruise boat over there, when we arrived we were greeted by another captain and given a tour on the glass bottom boat. The reefs are amazing, incredible looking fish, the coral and turtles were simply breath takingly beautiful. On the Island we were given snorkels to explore the reef. I absolutely loved snorkelling and it reminded me of our honeymoon in Thailand ( I miss my man!). Green Island is small and it only took 20 minutes to cover but there was plenty to do for the 5 hours we were there. Nanny enjoyed an island massage while we indulged in macadamia ice-cream ‘yummy’.

To keep up with Super Nanny, I had suggested that we opt for adventure every second day, with a day at the park chilling in-between to allow myself and the kids to reenergise but this was rejected and Nan organised the famous Cairns Sky Rail tour to Kuranda. We caught the train up that was a wonderful treat for the children although the same old “I’m hungry” popped up every so often. We arrived 1.5 hours later and to our surprise there were markets everywhere (Mum was in heaven). We had a scrumptious lunch and Nanny dared Charlie to eat two massive jam donuts for lunch meanwhile I’m cringing. Needless to say, Charlie accepted the dare and washed it down with ice cream!  I thought grandparents did this sort of thing behind our back lol.

Between adventures and daily trips to town or local shopping centres, we took full advantage of this unreal caravan park.  There is seriously not a chance to become bored at this place.

It’s been lovely doing a few day trips and tourist attractions but we certainly have to pick and choose carefully to keep us on budget (We are still waiting for the Sunrise Cash Cow who hasn’t called us yet)

Mum’s stay came to an end and she was brilliant at distracting my thoughts of missing the boys especially Jack whom I’ve been away for no longer than four nights in 6 years. It was sad to see Nanny go and we won’t she her for another 8 weeks but we had such a remarkable time a very -special memory was made.

One week down and one to go.
