Mel and Brenden of All Around Oz are on the Adelaide to Melbourne section of the Follow the Sun Relay. In this post, they drive from Mildura to Swan Hill.
Moving on from Mildura, we decided we would take the opportunity to check out some more Silo Art. So, we headed off towards the tiny village of Patchewollock. Patchy, as it is known to the locals, is a great little spot in the heart of Mallee country.
It even has two giant Mallee Fowl’s made of iron. But the real attraction is the giant mural of a local farmer on the side of one of the silos. We were totally awestruck again by the detail that is in this work of art!
We also found that Patchy had a great little shop and although we didn’t call in at the pub it came highly recommended by a couple of locals that we got chatting to.
Our next stop was the equally tiny village of Lascelles. The Silo Art in this town is different to some of the other artworks that we have seen. It is again of two local farmers but in a sepia tone, using the colouring of the silo itself to great effect. Just magical to see in person.
Lascelles also has a pub which incorporates a cafe and shop, plus a small caravan park.
Continuing on towards Swan Hill we did a quick detour to check out Lake Tyrrell, which is the largest Salt Lake in Victoria. From a viewing platform, we could see just how vast this lake is. We could also see massive piles of salt ready to be sent for processing.
Arriving in Swan Hill we headed to the Big 4 Riverside Park. This was another top spot and this time our site was absolute waterfront! The trees on the river bank were teeming with Western Corellas, calling out to each other as the evening started to cool down.
The park itself had a lovely pool area which we made good use of each afternoon. Fabulous clean and spacious amenities block and an awesome camp kitchen with BBQ’s and tables outside and bench space, fridge and microwave inside along with air conditioning!
The next day we decided to check out the Swan Hill Pioneer Village. This was a great way to spend the morning learning about Swan Hill’s pioneering past. The buildings, streets, and machinery on display are authentic to how life would have been 150 years ago.
In the afternoon we checked out the Catalina Flying Boat museum at Lake Boga. We had no idea that Lake Boga played a significant role in Australia’s defences during the Second World war, repairing and servicing not just Catalina’s but many other planes involved in the war effort.
One thing we really did love about Swan Hill was the walking track along the river’s edge. It was the perfect spot to enjoy an evening walk plus it had some exercise equipment which is great when you are traveling.
