Ellen and Les continue the Follow the Sun Relay with a drive from Katherine to Nitmiluk Gorge.
We have a few more fun things to share about Katherine, so here is a list of attractions we didn’t get to visit but wish we had.
A 2-2.5hr activity in which you will learn the technique of Rarrk painting from Top End Aboriginal artist Manuel Pamkal, while he shares stories and plays the didgeridoo. You will also learn about fire lighting and spear throwing, then have the opportunity to browse through the art gallery and interact with the gorgeous little wallabies! This is an experience we will definitely be coming back to do!
Tom and Annabell Curtain and their brilliantly well trained animals will give you a glimpse of life on a station. You will see horses, working dogs, PUPPIES, cattle, pigs, donkeys, mules, ducks, goats and BUFFALO! The show starts with a live demonstration of how Tom trains horses and then moves onto how the dogs are trained, with a few cheeky moments spread throughout the show. Entertaining, educational and a whole lot of family fun!
Roughly 40km north of Katherine, turn right and after around 20km you’ll find Edith Falls, a series of cascading waterfalls and pools on the Edith River. Crystal clear water that is safe to swim and relax in, with lots of shady space for picnics! Really bummed we missed this one on this trip!
We pulled up the van in our shady powered site at Nitmiluk Camping & Caravan Park and ran straight over to check the pool out! The bistro and pool area will make you feel like you’re in a resort with an amazing, clean pool to swim in and the bistro open from 4.30pm with snacks, a BUFFET(!!!) and much needed cold drinks. The amenities block is huge, the showers have great water pressure and there’s plenty of showers and toilets for all the guests that can fit in this spacious park.
Our first night here we took the easy hike to the first lookout over the Katherine Gorge to watch the sunset. Some of the best things in life really are free! The walk isn’t strenuous but our old tickers were really kicking. There are a few rocky steps and steep stairs but even if you stop half way the sunset will still be ahhhmazing!
The next morning we hiked again, for a solid 2 minutes to the bistro for a great, barista made coffee and Nitmiluk burgers!
Yet again, we had no luck with fishing (we’re blaming the ‘wrong time of year’ and not our skills) but the day was made complete with our first Happy Hour in the pool/bistro area.
Ellen played some live music, we chatted about our trip so far and lots of people scored some Dometic hats and stubby holders. Great atmosphere and an even better buffet!
We really enjoyed Katherine to Nitmiluk Gorge. Next stop: Batchelor and Litchfield National Park! A place we’ve been waiting to explore.
