Tag along with Follow the Sun Relay participants Jess and Ridge as they drive from Karijini to Karratha. It was a long, hot one but well worth the trip.
After departing from Karijini, we began the long drive to Karratha. From Joffre Gorge (where we spent the morning) the drive was about six hours. Again, if you’re doing this trip remember to fill up on fuel at every opportunity!
We’ve been on the road for about a week now and one thing that consistently amazes us is the scenery as we drive- it’s very different to the sort of highways we are used to!
We arrived at our Discovery Parks Karratha accommodation in the afternoon and got a lovely warm welcome, plus free reusable water bottles (an excellent accessory for long hot days!) and some great tips of things to do around the area. This park had great showers and laundry facilities, which we definitely made the most of.
We spent some time chatting and getting to know our site neighbours Kaz and Mick, who are originally from New Zealand but are now living in Australia and travelling around the country. After years of planning, they packed up their lives and have now been living on the road in WA for three months. They are about to start work on a station for another three months before travelling around the rest of the country to see as much as possible.
Kaz also makes and sells amazing crochet creations and they even gifted us with a little knitted gecko mascot to join us on our travels! You sure do meet some great people on caravan and camping trips and it just goes to show that this lifestyle and holiday option really has something to offer everybody.
Karratha is a great little town and has some cool things to see and do. We particularly loved going out to Dampier to see the water and the Red Dog memorial. If you haven’t heard the story, Red Dog was a famous dog well known for his travels through the Pilbara region. He made friends everywhere he went, hitching rides between towns and becoming a sort of mascot of the area.
Karratha also has a cool entertainment precinct featuring a diverse program of arts and culture- we were hoping to catch a movie at the Moonrise Outdoor Cinema, but unfortunately nothing was showing when we were there! This would be an awesome experience though if you could time your visit around it 😊
After a big day we decided to treat ourselves to some takeaway and were happy to see that there are plenty of options in town for food as well, and even a little area on Barthgate Rd where there is a congregation of food trucks- not what we expected in a small town, but it’s a great concept and offers a lot of different options all in one place.
The next morning we hit the road for another long drive to Exmouth!
